Discuss. I don't know whether is better, would strongly argue is at least as good.

It's very good. Personally, I think Simon and Garfunkel's harmonies are irreplaceable. But this version is very good overall.

this is the problem when people don't understand how a thread works or are too lazy to post correctly... you can't compare 2 songs if you don't post the original.

Re: Music Thread- Covers better than the original
I don't care for the Disturbed cover.
Anyway, here's a couple, i wouldn't say they're better (The Band is one of my favorite bands ever), but they're both very good.
The Weight--Duane Allman and Aretha Franklin
Very bluesy and a lot of soul, of course. Two of the greats, they really make it special. It sounds a lot different than other covers.
The Weight--Gillian Welch, David Rawlins, and Old Crow Medicine Show
More traditional cover.

Slam dunk IMHO...Disturbed doing Simon & Garfinkle's Sound O' Silence...as a side note, David Draiman, lead singer, was voted #42 of top 100 metal vocalists of all time....dude has a phenomenal range of abilities. Bought the song the first time I heard it...
Disturbed isn't metal.

Re: Music Thread- Covers better than the original
wuss metal, maybe...
what's also really lame about it is that they will probably make more $$$ off that one song then everything else they've ever recorded, combined. llame...

He did a couple of cover albums- I think they were something like "You scratch my back"- covers of his songs, and "I'll scratch yours"- him covering other people.
His cover of Bon Iver's "Flume" is a beautiful song:
The original, which is pretty great:

fair enough? anyway, that Bon Iver album is damn near perfect and the circumstances it was recorded under make it even more astounding. not a fan of the Gabriel cover AND i love him, so odd. but read about the concept and i'm going to listen to those albums this week, i'm sure i'll find a gem... Neil Young, that song is not about his father, fyi... -Jn

Re: Music Thread- Covers better than the original
Yeah, JF...gonna hafta disagree on that one. A very nice tribute to Neil and a cool song. However, completely different song (words) that simply honor the original, so not a true cover? ....and certainly not better, IMHO
Probly an age thing....lol. Although, if thats the case, I wouldn't love the Disturbed version of S & G Silence....hmmm.
Cool tune tho, thanks...gonna go buy it ;o)

I like the mash up of the Prodigy vs Enya:

I think I like Satchmo's or Ella Fitzgerald's versions better, but Bobby Darin's is good, too.

I like Darin's smoothness. It perfectly suits the song in some ways. I'm a sucker for songs that have a darker meaning than the way they're delivered though.

Re: Music Thread- Covers better than the original
the Kendalls do a great version of Wayfaring Stranger. It's a pretty mysterious track, since it first appeared on album 10 years ago and the elder Kendall had already been dead 10 years. It's easy enough to find on torrent sites etc. but there are no YouTube links or anything. I can't really post the original since it's a Roud indexed song and therefore predates recordings.
