Yes, I'm a long-timer, too and will continue with hopes of the site regaining momentum. As a tourney nut, this was a fantastic site in its heydey for creative, big tourneys.

I have a love-hate relationship with the ever-growing list of maps. I enjoy the creative outlet and the added wrinkle of a Risk-like strategy game, but must admit I find some maps a drudgery and can see why that would be overwhelming to a new player.

..I don't know why they got ride of Classic Art and Classic Shapes...They should bring them back..to go along with CLASSIC... We have 3 Age of Realms that are just about the same. 9 USA maps...WWII Eastern Front..WWII Western Front...WWII Europe...2 Slovakia maps again...2 Europe maps....A bunch of others that are just about the same....Who knows why Art and Shapes were AXED..Maybe to keep things under 100 maps...Before the MAP explosion..Where maps were coming out . All over the place...Some people just want to roll the dice and get to fighting. Not try and read a novel of directions. (If the MOON is in alignment with Jupiter and a dog is peeing east on a Mexican beach..you get +5 armies. But if a zebra is swimming across the English Channel with a monkey on it's back..you get -3 armies)..I'm mean COME ON PEOPLE...STOP ALREADY. :roll:

ironically, just a day or two ago, Jupiter and the moon were in line.... venus was pretty well in line too.

No one is forcing new players to interact with those maps. If we have a flaw, it's that the start a game / join a game interface doesn't yet have a way to easily filter out 'advanced' maps. That's a UI issue, not a content issue.

The site should have a "basic" and "advanced" section. The basic section would be default for anyone coming in off the net, people with an account could select which they see by default.

The basic section should be simple maps with fewer game types and fewer options. There should be a "quick join" button so people can come to the site, and start playing in a minute or two without having to do research and exploration first. I think this would help new users come and stay.
