History of Nuclear War Series Infocentre

Post by Dukasaur »

This is not a sign-up thread!

[spoiler=origin of the history of nuclear war series]the history of nuclear war series
I first conceived this series in June of 2011. The idea began with [player]DoomYoshi[/player], who was in love with Nuclear Spoils at the time and mentioned to me that there weren't enough good Nuclear tournaments. By a bit of serendipity, I was doing some reading at the time concerning Hahn's and Leitner's experiments, and I formed the idea of doing a grand tournament encompassing the full history of nuclear war from the early experiments to the distant future.

As I gathered maps to go with different parts of the nuclear story, I realized it was just too much to do in one tournament, and so I split it into four. Four became more, and eventually the series became ten tournaments including the Grand Finale.[/spoiler]

History of Nuclear War I -- explored the early days of nuclear research, from the discovery of elemental radioactivity in 1896 to the entry of the U.S. into WW II in 1941. It was first posted on June 25th, 2011, and concluded on May 17th, 2012

History of Nuclear War II -- focused on the time from the entry of the U.S. into WW II in 1941 until the dropping of nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. First posted November 19, 2011, and concluded on January 3rd, 2013.

  • [player]bearshark3[/player]
[/spoiler]Grand Champion: Junior Bee

[spoiler=fog or sun]Fog or Sun: In the first three tournaments, I had players vote on fog or sun. Most of the time the fog won, and sunny rounds were rare. In addition, it was a lot of work for me tallying the votes, and in fact a few times I tallied them wrong. After HNW III, a simpler system occurred to me. I would put out HNW IV as foggy with no vote, and then I would re-run the series as sunny. HNW V, however, was also foggy, because it was a clone of IV. The sunnies, therefore, are HNW VI, VII, VIII, and IX. The Grand Finale will have a combination, although the precise arrangement isn't set yet.[/spoiler]
History of Nuclear War IV -- looked at current and future possibilities of nuclear war, now that the Cold War no longer dominates the political scene. First posted October 02nd, 2012, and completed December 1st 2013.

History of Nuclear War GF -- the Grand Finale. Preliminary announcement June 10th 2014, thread posted Sept 6th, last game completed January 3rd 2015, final announcement on January 10th.
[spoiler=preliminary announcement June 10th](As of now, June 10th) HNW VIII should end within a few days and HNW IX should end, I'm guessing, in about six weeks. It's time, therefore, to start thinking about the Grand Finale.

Preparation for the History of Nuclear War Grand Finale:

Nine players will play in the Grand Finale. It will follow the same format as the regular Finales in the series: Nine simultaneous terminator games on nine maps. Unlike the rest of the series, these games will be 9-player, not 8-player. Each of the nine tournaments in the series will be represented by one player. The Champion of the tournament will have first dibs on representing that tournament. If he is unable or unwilling, then the spot will be offered to the player who came second, if he is unable or unwilling, then the spot will be offered to the player who came third, and so on.

Basic eligibility: In order to play in this Grand Finale, there are some basic requirements:
  • You must be a member of Conquer Club in good standing (not under any bans.)
  • You must be a premium member (nine games simultaneously, speaks for itself.)
  • You must indicate a willingness to play in the Grand Finale sign-up thread (NO, don't go looking for it! I haven't posted it yet! This is just a preview announcement) and select a map.

Choosing maps: The player representing a tournament will choose a map representing that tournament. Obviously, it must be one of the maps that was used. At least I hope it's obvious. If you are representing HNW VIII, you must choose a map from HNW VIII, not VII, even though your favourite map of all time was used in HNW VII.

You can always visit the History of Nuclear War Series InfoCentre for links to all the tournaments to review which maps go with which.

Players who have won more than one tournament in the series (at present, that means Junior Bee, but there are still two tourneys in progress so there might be another name on that list before long) cannot appear more than once in the finale. They (he?) will have to choose which tournament to represent, and will be ineligible to represent the others. However, he will get a special bonus: the right to ix-nay four of the maps used in each of the tournaments that he chooses not to represent.

So, let's work an actual example. Junior Bee won HNW III, IV, and V. He might still win VIII, but let's ignore that for now. In the Grand Finale, Junior decides to represent HNW IV. He is thus ineligible to represent HNW III or V, and the baton in those tournaments is passed to PaRKoN, who was second in HNW III, and Marshallbobby, who was second in HNW V. Marshallbobby has vanished from Conquer Club, so his spot would in turn be passed to Morleyjoe, who was third in HNW V. Junior Bee, as his special perk for the two places he vacates, would get a veto over four maps from III and four maps from V. So, PaRKoN and Morleyjoe would each only have five maps to choose from.

Fog or Sun: If you are representing one of the first three tournaments, you will get to choose fog or sun when you choose a map. If you are representing the all-fog tournaments HNW IV and V, then your map will be played foggy. If you are representing one of the last four tournaments, your map will be played sunny.

In accordance with the Grand Finale Policy, the winner of the Grand Finale will receive a General Achievement medal and not a Tournament Achievement medal.

Will probably be about seven weeks (give or take a couple) before this gets under way, but I wanted to start working out the details and get people thinking about them.[/spoiler][spoiler=finalists]final player list:
  • [player]Culs de Sac[/player] representing HNW I
  • [player]Fuzzy316[/player] representing HNW II
  • [player]Junior Bee[/player] representing HNW III
  • [player]PaRKoN[/player] representing HNW IV
  • [player]morleyjoe[/player] representing HNW V
  • [player]contreras.ale[/player] representing HNW VI
  • [player]GreenBaize[/player] representing HNW VII
  • [player]Osman76[/player] representing HNW VIII
  • [player]Beko the Great[/player] representing HNW IX
[/spoiler]
Grand Champion: PaRKoN

Best of 2011 Series Infocentre

Post by Dukasaur »

DK's Best of 2011 Series:
There were a lot of new maps in 2011 that really impressed me, and I wanted to honour them. In this series I use the same 40-35-30-25-20-16-14-12-10-Final8 elimination pattern that I first used in the History of Nuclear War series. The nine maps are always the same, but spoils and other settings vary.

DKs Best of 2012 and 2013 series

Post by Dukasaur »

After 2011, the "Best of" series went from 8 tournaments per year to 4 tournaments per year.
[spoiler=survey and origins]In preparation for the Best of 2012 series, I conducted a survey of everyone who had played in my Best of 2011 series.
survey pm:
Dukasaur wrote:Greetings, friends!

You are receiving this message because you signed up for one or more tournaments in my Best of 2011 series. The Best of 2012 series will be starting soon, but I have couple announcements to make first, and some decisions that I hope you will help me with.

First off: The Best of 2012 maps just don't excite me as much as the Best of 2011. Don't get me wrong -- some of them are pretty nice, but there's nothing that completely blows me away like Transsib1914 or Conquer Rome. (Well, Baltic Crusades has really captivated me, but for cross-consistency I am going with koontz's system and treating Baltic as a 2013 map.)

Consequently, I am going to continue the Best of 2011 series for at least three more tournaments (which will bring us to 8, at which point we qualify for a Grand Finale tourney.) The Best of 2012, on the other hand, will be no more than four or five tournaments and might only be three.

I would like your input on what settings you would like to see in the B of 2012s. It would be nice if I had the time to do all 16 of these possibilities, but I don't, and other tournament ideas are calling me. So, please follow the link below and help me narrow this down.
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KXTCDNW
This is my first time using surveymonkey and I'm not very familiar with it, so please let me know if you have any problems.

The survey runs for a week, but please go do it now while it is fresh in your mind...:)

The survey results are not binding. The final decision is mine, and I want to have a lot of variety. Still, I of course will consider the results very carefully. Thank you for your time!

:D

Naturally, there is sample bias, since I was only seeking the opinions of players in my tournaments of a similar type. There's no pretense here that these values are useful for any purpose other than the one I intended.

I took the raw data from surveymonkey and plugged the numbers into a spreadsheet of my own, and did a simple weighting, assessing each choice +4 for a "LOVE", +2 for a "like", +1 for a "meh" and -2 for a "Disgusting." You can view those HERE.

Based on this formula, the options have scores ranging from a high of 84 for Escalating Foggy to a low of -24 (yes, negative 24) for the Freestyle option. I really didn't expect to find much support for Freestyle, but I was curious, so I included the option.

Not surprisingly, the two most popular choices were both Escalating, with scores of 84 for the Foggy version and 77 for the Sunny equivalent. One of the tourneys in the Best of 2012 will definitely be Foggy Escalating.

The third most popular choice was Randomized, with a score of 76. This too will be represented.

Although both the most popular choices were Escalating, I want a reasonable diversity. No Spoils lagged far behind and will not be represented. Flat Rate Foggy and Nuclear Sunny both have aggregate scores of 63, placing them fourth and fifth. The Flat Rate Foggy version of the Best of 2012 has already been posted and will be the first to run. The Sunny Nukes will probably be next.

None of the "Special" choices fared very well. I had at least thought that Special 2 (the basic SoC settings of Sunny Unlimited Escalating) would have a fan base, but apparently not. Still, if you want to play one of these tournaments on the Special 2 settings, despair not! They will not be used in the Best of 2012 series, but they WILL be used in the next tourney of the Best of 2011 series![/spoiler]

DKs CSFR Frag Series Infocentre

Post by Dukasaur »

Today I begin a new series based on my original homeland -- Czechoslovakia -- and [player]Oneyed[/player]'s excellent map of it.
[spoiler=map][bigimg]http://maps.conquerclub.com/Czecho_Slovak_Fragmentation3.S.jpg[/bigimg][/spoiler]

Each of the 25 tournaments in this series will celebrate some aspect of a different town or city on the map. To avoid favouritism, I have randomized the order of the towns. For more information on this series visit the DKs CSFR Frag series Infocentre.
[spoiler=full list of terts on CSFR map]Oneyed was nice enough to supply me with a nice list with all the spellings and accent marks correct.

"Help Me Learn" series.

[spoiler=the basic premise]
Dukasaur wrote:Even after all these years, there are still a dozen maps that I haven't cross-mapped. There will be 12 tournaments in the series, one for each of these maps. In each tournament, you will attempt to teach me one map.
my worst maps
These are the maps I have not yet cross-mapped. There are a couple, like Krazy Kingdoms and Temple of Jinn, that I haven't really given a chance. There's others, like 1982, that I've tried over and over and over again but just can't figure out a winning strategy for. There's a few like WWII Eastern Front that I seem to understand but just seem to always have bad luck on. And then of course there's the vile mostrosity Hive, where just looking at the fucking thing is like driving a railroad spike between my eyes.

Pirates and Merchants ... 0 wins 0 unique kills
Rail Asia ... 0 wins 0 unique kills
Temple of Jinn ... 1 wins 1 unique kills
Krazy Kingdoms ... 2 wins 1 unique kills
WWII Eastern Front ... 2 wins (in 18 attempts!) 1 unique kills
1982 ... 3 wins (in 16 attempts!) 2 unique kills
Pot Mosbi ... 3 wins 3 unique kills
Vertex ... 3 wins 3 unique kills
Feudal Epic ... 3 wins (in 18 attempts!) 3 unique kills
Hive ... 2 wins (in 17 attempts!) 3 unique kills
2011 World Cup ... 1 wins 4 unique kills
Classic Cities Sydney ... 2 wins 4 unique kills

Just to be clear: each of the maps will be a separate tournament. THIS tournament is only for Sydney.

Eligibility: To play in this tournament, you must be Premium, and must MapRank positive on this map.
The current patched version of MapRank can be found HERE. It works for me both with Firefox and and up-to-date Greasemonkey and with Chrome and an up-to-date Tampermonkey. (Keep in mind, if you want to use it in Game Finder, it must be the olde version of Game Finder, NOT the new one.)

Basic Games Procedure: 16 players will take turns teaching me the map in question. I will launch only one game at a time, and I expect it to be about 2 months to launch all 16 games. In each game, one player will be the Teacher, who will partner with me and attempt to explain the map to me. The Teacher will choose the settings. (No speed, no freestyle, and there must be a round limit. Other than that pretty much anything goes.) Two players will be randomly chosen to be the opponents. It's a limited random -- nobody will get their second game until everybody has had their first, and nobody will get their third until everybody has had their second. Thus, you will play a total of three games in the regular season, one as Teacher and two as Opponent.

I will be present in all the regular games, but I will NOT score and I am NOT eligible to win the tournament.

Finals: Once all the regular games are done, the top four players will advance to the Finals. The top will be decided by:
  1. Total wins
  2. Wins as Teacher
  3. Solo wins (where you manage to pull out a win even though your partner has been killed)
  4. Fastest wins (sum of rounds of all games where you won.)
  5. Precedence (first to sign up.)
The top four players will play six games (every combination of four players possible) and for each pair of games I will ask the partners to jointly choose the settings.

Epiphany Points: If at any point when you are the Teacher you say something that makes me see things in a new way or understand something I didn't understand before, you will get an Epiphany Point. Epiphany points have absolutely nothing to do with winning the tournament. However, I will total them over the 12 tournaments in the series, and the player with the most Epiphany Points after all 12 tournaments will win a prize, probably 1 year of premium. Perhaps I'll get a GA approved for that also. After I see how the first tournament goes I'll give this more thought.
[/spoiler]

Epiphany Points:

    Sydney
iAmCaffeine: half point
Witt13: half point
TX AG 90: half point
Duke_Spirey: half point
agentcom: half point
King_Herpes: full point

    World Cup 2011
