Defining "Real Time"
I see the term "rt" thrown around a lot, but I'm not sure if anyone's ever defined it. To me, it means that all players make an effort to keep the game going. If you are playing freestyle, however, I'm not sure "rt" means you always have to begin your turn immediately, deploy armies, etc. I think it should be acceptable to wait some things out without causing the game to go on forever.

RT is a game where the intent is to play the game through in one sitting. In seq, that means starting a turn fairly quickly when it's your turn (as if you were sitting around a table playing). Freestyle, however, is a different animal, as players will often hold until others have made their moves before making theirs, but as long as the game is moving forward and not waiting too long, it's a RT.

Ya, basically everyone should be in the game room at once, either talking or playing. It is acceptable to wait until after your opponents play to make your move, but could be annoying for the others in the game to have to wait for you.
Basically, as long as the other guys dont have to wait a LONG time, its RT.

I would agree to that. I also think that sometimes people have a legitimate reason to wait. In that case, people should be willing to make some sort of deal (i.e. all come in at once).

I would suggest not starting a RT freestyle game. most players will wait to go simply to attack and take over a continent. once the next round begins, they can click start turn and collect all the continent bonuses. to prevent this, the only thing you can do is take your turn at a later time so the player doesnt collect all his bonuses. than the game becomes un RT. This happens in almost every freestyle RT that is set up.

I don't think that HAS to happen. It's not always to your advantage to come in last. Hopefully, what "rt" avoids is players waiting hours to sneak attack. It's a legitimate strategy in my book, but it definitely slows things down!
I was just in the chat area looking for a RT NON FREESTYLE game, but had no takers. The explanation from one chatter was that people tend to drop out of real time playing when it is a sequential styled game. HE was also looking to play RT, but would only play in freestyle.
Freestyle is on my "ignore" list so to speak, so I guess I am out of luck at getting an RT game...

Luke, all I play is sequential, and have never had problems finding a game. Better luck next time.

Re: Defining "Real Time"
RT hasn't been effectively defined because it is a mythical concept considering the crippling site limitations in place for this functionality.
So I guess it can be defined as whatever the hell you want it to be, and expect violent differences of opinion once you get involved with others who differ from your opinion.

Personally, I love freestyle rt because the timing requires so much more skill. But I have one more problem to add:
Escalating cards, 2 (or more) players on 5 cards. This once happened me in an rt freestyle. We must have sat for almost an hour before I decided to make a move.
Still, I rarely play freestyle at all now because it is so rarely rt

Actually, the basic consensus I've gotten from people here is basically how I would have defined it. I asked the question because someone wanted rt and then complained when I wasn't starting my turn right away. To me, there's a difference between keeping the game moving along and foolishly not using timing to your advantage.

freestyle rt with unlimited chaining is a lot of fun for me.
but i wish the game programmers added support for such a game, for example adding a new game category "real time" where, say, only 4 minutes is alotted per turn and 20 minutes for a round.
it might put a lot of load on the servers if a lot of people play this way though, because even though i am still new i can imagine the strategy being refined into refreshing a lot.

The problem with your suggestion is that sometimes the game lulls for discussion, to talk out deals, etc. I would play something slightly longer than that, though...maybe 10 minute turns, 20 minute rounds.

i don't think i have ever been in a rt that only lasted 30 minutes..
I have… It was freestyle though. Each round was over in like 2 minutes. Crazy fast.
