              Final Forge

---The Italy Map has reached the ‘Final Forge’ Stage. I've revived this thread from the pits of the Foundry furnace and have examined the contents. Nearly every major concern has been addressed. If there are any other current concerns, please make your voice heard. There will be at least two days (but may extend pass that) for you to post any objections; if no one has posted any protest after two days the map will be deemed finished with the 'Foundry Brand' of approval and will be submitted for live play. If after two days there is still discussion going on it may continue until said discussion has reached the conclusion that the map has reached its final and polished version.

Post questions and concerns if any.

Huh - how'd this map make FF without XML? Or is FF a GFX thing only?

I'll start resizing the map for a smaller version. Then I'll post xml. I'm out of town this Fri - next Tuesday so I'll have no updates between then - but I'll be working on it the next few days. Thanks Andy!

Hmm. My poll is currently at 50/50 for Fuzzy / Thin borders. I'll give it a bit longer before I start. If it's still a tie later, I'll make an executive decision and pick the thin lines.

Hehe. I only pass that comment on this specific map though! ;) Glad it's got final forge though. Well done RJ. :)

XML Code passed testing. All attack routes are correct. Army numbers have been tweaked for positioning. Even though I originally didn't care for the 'fuzzy' borders - they are kind of growing on me and they do give this map a unique feel. Large map is 800px wide. Small map is 600px wide.

I got the small map legend as clear as I could using the same italic font in the large map. The phrase "Number of cities occupied" is a little broken up, but I still think it's legible.

I think playability will be interesting in that there's not many places to hide. Most countries have 4 or 5 borders. Any final questions / concerns let me know.

Fantastic map but, as you say, the legend on the small version may be a bit small. I suggest enlarging it a bit as you do have a fair amount of free space to work with.

I only play on the large maps, but the small legend is still very legible for me at 1280x1024.

It's looking great, RJ!

On the small map, is it possible to move the name Toscana Ovest up a little, so the 'Ov' is a little clearer?

Regarding the small legend, it is pushing the limit of smallness, but I think it is fine. But I still might consider bumping up the Citta Bonus title and the Territorio slightly, then you could have a little more room for the # of Cities text. And for that text, maybe consider bolding it, or making it stand out a little more with size.

And one last random thought, was there any particular reason why you chose the left as opposed to the right for the name and coordinate placement for Lazio? Just curious. (I think the left is fine, I just never notice how interestingly shaped the country is! :))

Would it be possible to see the Pantelleria label moved to the left side of the island and the coordinate on the island itself?

Sure. I struggled with that but I'll work on it a bit more.

I'll work on the font a little more. I'm sure I can get it a little cleaner w/out losing the style

No reason.

I'll call on Ruben Cassar for the correct translation - then I'll fix. Good call DiM.

Yep - I'll do that also. I may not get to these updates until next week as I'm going out of town tomorrow (Fri). But I'll be sure to get to them and any more suggestions that may be posted.

Thanks guys! I feel like I've accomplished something !!

Sorry mate...Dim's translation is right. However it should be "Il numero di citta` occupate" (not occupati). Romanian is similar to Italian as they are both Latin languages so I guess he has an advantage! :)

Also you can change this as well: Created by RJBeals = Creato da RJBeals

I have also noticed that I might have made a mistake earlier. I had told you to call a region "Tirolo" in Italian. However Italians do not refer to that region as Tirolo (although that's the translation of Tirol) but as "Alto Adige". Tirol apparently refers to both the Italian and Austrian parts of Tirol so it's better to use Alto Adige. You might want to rename that as well.

yay i was right. i just put the wrong gender

indeed romanian and italian are really similar. not as similar as italian and spanish but close. that's why i still remember something even though i never used it in the last 12 years.

romanian also has slavic influences which make it harder than italian.

map italy

Post by romolo_augustolo »

Last map is quite good, but I think not good for orientation rotate.
You can use right proportion with north sud orientation like in the other versions.

Also you can add some decorative with monuments: coliseum Pisa tower and others.

Colors aren't so good also.

And why don't use region borders for an historical moment, for instance:
the preroman Italy: etruschi, latini,liguri,
or medieval and rinaissance status of comuni: Firenze Milano Venezia
or the marine's republics: venetia genova, pisa and amalfi
or il risorgimento and unification of Italy 1860. Piemonte Garibaldi expedition to sicily ecc.
