Subject: Based on the layers in the crust, how old is the Earth?

A common mistake is to look at the rate of soil accumulation today and extrapolate that it's always been this rate. If that were the case, then there would be commingling of the soil layers from erosion, but there is not.

Why?

How does, say, a top layer intermingle with a lower layer? What is the area of effect that "erosion" has? Where is the water (I think it disappeared a long time ago).

Are you familiar with heterogenous mixtures?
