Re: More random options

Post by lozzini »

This has been suggested quite a few times, and i believe it is on lack's to do list and after the random map add on, there was talk of more random options to be added. so rather than suggesting this again why not use the search feature and add your weight to the pre-existing suggestions ;)

random cards/forts/fog

Post by khazalid »

an extra option at the end of each line in 'create a game'

should be pretty easy to implement unless i'm horribly mistaken?
had i been wise, i would have seen that her simplicity cost her a fortune

Yeah - I like this idea...

All of the options could be set for random (or not) as you see fit...

Would create a great tourney too - RANDOM Tourney... all games are 6 player random everything!!

That would make a very good test of balanced abilities.

Total random games

Post by dakky21 »

Concise description:
  • When starting a game, option to choose only the number of players and turn duration, and put everything else on random.

Specifics/Details:
  • All settings except number of players are random, including singles, teams, map, inital troops and all other settings.
  • When game is created, everything except number of players and turn duration is shown as random, and the settings are known when last player joins the game.
  • Possibility to select what will be random

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Many tourneys say "random" settings but they're just hand picked. No "real" random tournaments.
  • Lots of achievements need new unique players in team to get them
  • There are people who avoid some settings, this way everything is upon their luck (or they don't join)
  • Should be simple to implement

I took one game and painted it so you get what I mean:

That would just be awesome!
Obviously, in even number games there can't be triples unless it's 12 players. Ruleset would be created, but that's up to the admins...

As posted below, something like this should be implemented:

Very interesting! Of course the next step is to selectively choose which settings will be random. :) Or maybe only the Spoils/Forts/Fog options can be random? Just throwing out ideas.

FoxGlove, you are very right...

Why not have "Start A Game" like this:

Without the red arrows of course :-D

I'd definitely get behind this if you can choose which factors are random, as shown in dakky's most recent post. Would the drop-down for Polymorphic also need to have a random option as well?

While we're at it, let's make round length and password random too.

I like the idea of random settings, but adding a tic for each individual setting seems a bit much.

Feature creep, Caffeine. Every new tic makes the game finder/creation page that much more complex.

I agree completely, but I don't think having a random option for each variable makes anything more complicated. It's not like it's a new setting that people won't understand the function of - it's very straightforward. I would even argue it makes starting games more simple for newer players who don't understand the various settings.

I really like this idea... especially being able to pick it selectively for various items. I understand the concern about the start a game screen though... hmm.

Maybe instead of 'random' on each variable there could be an organised column of boxes to one side; you select whichever boxes you want click 'randomise', or something to that effect?

As per my original idea, round length can't be random, as if you get 1 minute speed when the last player joins the game, he will probably win it, because other players will deadbeat at that moment.

at the moment, we need less options, not more. games hardly fill as is, adding more options means even more games waiting to fill and never doing so. back in the "old days' of 15,000 users, OK. but not with the numbers we have now….

Instead how about an single tic that randomized all settings except number of players game type and round length. This way you could have random settings without adding a bunch of space to the game page.

That was the original idea... Since it is a total random game idea.

I've run tournaments with random games, and while some of the games end up with interesting combinations, others are just terrible. No Spoils Assassing with Trench is just awful, for instance. Nobody can build up for a kill, you can't get to your target, and it just turns into a long drawn-out builder.

The next time I do a tournament with Random settings, there will be pre-set lists with popular combinations like Escalating Sunny Terminator or No Spoils Foggy Triples, and I will just randomize from among them.

Not sure if that could be applied here or if it's a complete derailment of your thread, but I would rather have an option to randomize from among pre-set lists of options rather than randomizing each option seperately.
