A beret is basque, a region half french half spanish that wants to be independant. Only a few very old men in that particular region wear them, so I can hardly understand how a beret became a french stereotype. But I guess the cowboy hat can be used to represent an american, or a sheep to represent a kiwi. Same thing with the mustache... I don t know when that myth came around, but as far as I know, it was very popular in the 19th century everywhere in europe, not just in france!

Anyway, what an asskicking!

History.

The French word béret, from which the English term derives, is based on the Béarnais Berret, a "sort of flat woollen cap, worn by the local peasants".[5] It was first mentioned 1835 in French and in the 19th century in English.

How is this answering my question? The Bearn and the Basque country are next to one another, and half in Spain half in France for the later. That beret is completely a Basque tradition on both sides of the border and it s worn only by a few old men only in that region. So again... How is that supposed to be a french stereotype? Let s say some native indian hat from indians living between arizona and mexico becomes the image we make ourselves of a stereotyped american. I guess you would wonder why as well!

Since you're excellent at missing points, I wont repeat it.

Meanwhile, back to the point of the thread: thanks again LHDD, was a fun war.
