Official Monthly Challenge for January
Brought to you by [player]DoomYoshi[/player] and the Community Team

Some of you might remember a series of Unofficial Challenges that I (DoomYoshi) organized in early 2013.
You may also have seen that we have a brand new Challenge Medal (click that link and scroll all the way to the bottom).
Those two facts are, believe it or not, related - I have been asked to run Official Monthly Challenges patterned on those unofficial challenges, and anyone who meets an Official Challenge will receive a Challenge Medal!

NO SIGN-UPS REQUIRED - Everyone is eligible!
All you need to do is play in at least one game started between January 1 and January 31 with the following settings:


Settings
Map: King of the Mountains
Players per game: 3-10 [3 or more; 10 or less]
Game Type: ANY TYPE
Initial Troops: Automatic OR Manual
Play Order: Sequential or Freestyle
Spoils: Escalating
Reinforcements: any reinforcement type
Special Gameplay: MUST HAVE TRENCH; Fog of War is
optional
Round Length: Casual or speed

Medal Criteria
To win a Challenge Medal, players must score 500 points in games with
the above criteria.

Terminator Games will be scored as follows:
30 Points for a kill
10 Point for being the last surviving player
10 Points per game played
Standard games are scored the same way, except all kills go to the
winning player

Assassin Games are:
10 for joining
25 points for each player defeated
7 extra points for winning
-50 points for eliminating the wrong player

4p dubs is 60 for winners; 10 for each player on the losing team
6p dubs is 90 for winners; 10 for each player on the losing team
8p dubs is 120 for winners; 10 for each player on the losing team
10p dubs is 150 for winners; 10 for each player on the losing team
A quads victory scores 65 for each winning player, 10 for each player on the losing team
6-player trips is 63 for each winner, 10 for each player on the losing team
9-player trips is 93 for each winner, 10 for each player on the losing team

Notes

• Games must start between CC Time: 2014-01-01 00:00:00 and CC Time: 2014-02-01 00:00:00 to be considered for the Challenge.
• Any issues will be solved by me, [player]DoomYoshi[/player] and my word is final.

No fancy story this time.

The settings that must be present are King of the Mountains, Trench, Escalating, 3-10 Players
Please double check and make sure you have all these settings set. The other settings are open. Round Limits are not mandatory, but are recommended to make sure all games finish on time.

Games can finish up to one week after the end of the month.

Rulings, FAQ and Other Items

Rules
1. No sign-up necessary.
2. Tournament Games do not count
3. If a setting is not clarified, it can be any of the options.
4. Deadbeats do not qualify for entrance points.
5. Wins by Round limit are treated the same way scoring is (i.e. in terminator winning by round limit is the same as killing all the rest of the players.

FAQ

Why are quads scored the way they are?

The scoring for team games is such that the expected value when you join an 8p game is the same no matter what the settings are (except assassin which is worth less).

In 8p dubs you have a 25% chance of winning 120 points and a 75% chance of winning 10 points, for a total expected points of 37.5.
In 8p standard, you have a 12.5% chance of winning 230 points and a 87.5% chance of scoring 10 points for a total expected points of 37.5.

The order doesn't actually matter, it's just for pride. If you notice a discrepancy in scoring, you can PM DoomYoshi but only if a) you are in the top 10, b) the scoring discrepancy would put you in the top 10, or c) the scoring discrepancy is the difference between a medal and not.

Those two facts are, believe it or not, related - I have been asked to run Official Monthly Challenges patterned on those unofficial challenges, and anyone who meets an Official Challenge will receive a Challenge Medal!

Some notes about Scotland; today (the 30th) is the feast day of St. Andrew and a holiday in Scotland. It is unlikely that the St. Andrew ever went to Scotland, as he is the Saint (and disciple of Jesus) who founded what is known now as the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, or Orthodox 'Pope'. The beautiful irony here is that the Orthodox church (or at least the Old Calendarists) have his Feast day on the 13th of December. So, if you are reading this part-way through the month, fret not, you can still win this medal and feast (yes, you need another excuse to feast in December).

Shortly after St. Andrew would have visited Scotland, there were a series of Roman campaigns, with their base in Brittania to try and invade Scotland and take it from the Caledonians. Agricola was the general, and he stressed the importance of building infrastructure in the areas of Scotland that he did conquer. By 84, he was recalled to Rome and his successors abandoned most of the fortress building projects.

The end result of this was the building of Hadrian's Wall. The Romans kept trying to conquer Scotland, and failed every time. Your mission is to defend Scotland. If you don't get a kill, Scotland becomes a vassal of Brittania, and Scottish identity suffers. If you get at least 1 kill, you hold the Romans off at the Antonine Wall (connects Renfrew to West Lothian; or Glasgow to Edinburgh). If you get more than one kill, or win the game, you have held off the Romans at the Hadrian line (or beyond?... the only limit is your imagination). Of course, if you want to play as the Romans and reverse the victory conditions, you are free to do so.

Every asterisk means a 14-point game. As games finish up, the scoreboard will shuffle. At the end, the order will be determined by points, tiebreakers will then go to most 14-pointers, then to least number of games, then to most games completed in December, then to fastest completed and finally fastest to 28.

EDIT: The best way to do this is being considered. It will probably be technical, but the idea is that the majority of games started in one month will be considered.

Only joins, kills and wins that occur in December count. If the game isn't finished in December, there are no points for finishing the game.

Similarly, if the game isn't started in December (but finishes in December), no points are awarded for starting the game.

can you show me the [code][/code] way to do that? The URL i get isn't accepted I think.

Yeah, if there's brackets in the URL, you have to post the &code for open and close bracket instead. I'll look for those and update this post when I find them. Also, you can remove any settings that aren't set from the URL.

Edit: okay, this used to work, but they've really screwed around with the gamefinder URL unfortunately. I know you used to be able to use the &codes for stuff when you were replacing a bracket in a setting. Unfortunately, the settings themselves now appear to have brackets attached to them for no apparent reason.

So formerly, this would come up in tournament names for example when you'd need to replace a tourney name like "[2013] Tournament" with "[2013] Tournament". Unfortunately, I can't get this to work any more. I have a feeling it's because instead of being a restriction (i.e. on the right side of an "=") the brackets now appear in the setting abbreviation themselves (i.e. on the left side of the "="). The alternative explanation is that I'm using the wrong &code.

Edit 2: Use %codes. Replace [ with %5b and ] with %5d and the URL should parse correctly, letting you place a working URL in a URL tag:

Edit 3: I took the liberty of making the URL for you. Notice that I removed any unset variables and also removed the userid variable, as I'm assuming that's used to not show games that you are in. If you leave that in there, I suspect that any game that you join may be removed from the search results. I think the new URLs are too clever by half. Not sure why they changed it up.

You could just hand out -1 points for every turn missed (or -5 for a deadbeat game) if you want to avoid spammed games for the medal that aren't played.

Yeah, if there's brackets in the URL, you have to post the &code for open and close bracket instead. I'll look for those and update this post when I find them. Also, you can remove any settings that aren't set from the URL.

Edit: okay, this used to work, but they've really screwed around with the gamefinder URL unfortunately. I know you used to be able to use the &codes for stuff when you were replacing a bracket in a setting. Unfortunately, the settings themselves now appear to have brackets attached to them for no apparent reason.

So formerly, this would come up in tournament names for example when you'd need to replace a tourney name like "[2013] Tournament" with "[2013] Tournament". Unfortunately, I can't get this to work any more. I have a feeling it's because instead of being a restriction (i.e. on the right side of an "=") the brackets now appear in the setting abbreviation themselves (i.e. on the left side of the "="). The alternative explanation is that I'm using the wrong &code.

Edit 2: Use %codes. Replace [ with %5b and ] with %5d and the URL should parse correctly, letting you place a working URL in a URL tag:

Edit 3: I took the liberty of making the URL for you. Notice that I removed any unset variables and also removed the userid variable, as I'm assuming that's used to not show games that you are in. If you leave that in there, I suspect that any game that you join may be removed from the search results. I think the new URLs are too clever by half. Not sure why they changed it up.
