Re: Name Change
The only way this would be plausible is if previous names are listed somewhere on a user's profile, and functions (such as invites) work with any username that used to be associated with the account.

Along that lines, another site i used to play on had the abilty to buy names etc. once you bought it, you could go to settings and drop down / change to any of your existing names. invites and things like that, as you say, work for any of the names.
so one month i could buy IcePack2 $10
next IcePack3 $10 (total 20)
next IcePack4 $10 (total 30)
and then any month after, i can switch to any of the previous ones since i already paid. its really just a display thing that changes and invites and lal that just go to the account, not the name.

Re: Name Change
I already solved that issue with my bulletpoint proposal a few posts above. once a username is changed, the old username is retired, no one else can use it and sending an invite to the old or new username works to invite that person.

Yes. This does solve blake's issue neatly. The main question is, besides invites, is there any coding changes that need to be done to make functions work for both old and new usernames? For example, what about PMs?

Everything that takes a username, Invites, PM's, Searches, Gifting, etc. would require a re-code. I did see your point earlier with the solution bekito, I'm just not sure it's something we're looking to pursue at this time. It's a neat idea though.

I'd think the drop-down log would be good, but I'd also think the new name should be replaced wherever it showed. Like, on foe list, on friend list, on game invites, prior games played, forum posts, etc.
Just FYI, the name changes does propagate across all of those now when it's done to hide personal information. You may not want the old one shown if it was changed for personal information (like mine). Your old username also isn't changed in any quoted forum posts, but it is in game logs.

Something that might not have been though of: When I joined I thought I was entering my real name first and then a screen name would be asked for later (as many sites do). Lo and behold, the first name I entered (my real name) was the ONLY name offered to me. Now, I'll admit that perhaps I was a little dense during the signup process ... but don't i now whish that I'd paid more attention? ... and it would CERTAINLY be nice to change my name to a more appropriate gamming name ... not to confuse and evade but to simply gain a wee bit of privacy.
... just sayin'

Re: Name Change
Um ... as a result of my post, BG sent me a PM advising me that my "real name" could be changed without cost by simply contacting king achilles or opening an eTicket. A couple of lines of text and a few minutes later and bada-bing, bada-boom ... problem solved. Thanks, BG, for reaching out and thanks to king achilles for such a swift response. Now I get to experience a whole new round of $h!+ for my new name (but I wouldn't have it any other way).

I would be in favor of a 1 name change per lifetime and that name change being free
Re: Name Change
There is a difference however between just changing the username and editing all those features to work with past user names.Ace Rimmer wrote:stahrgazer wrote:TheForgivenOne wrote:Maybe add in a little log somewhere on their profile tracking their name changes? Re: Name Change
why not just add the phpbb nickname coding so people can create whatever nickname they desire that day but still retain there original screen name so as to not be confused the original screen name stays displayed on there user screen but there nickname displays in forum posts and (I assume) on the games. You eliminate the need to charge and you provide a feature that the community would enjoy. Before anyone says anything to the negative I have moderated on 3 separate forums using phpbb that had the feature added and it was awesome.

I think it should be changed wherever; and the "it was changed for personal info and that's okay and should be an exception" doesn't ring well with me because no one could KNOW it's your real name unless YOU chose to disclose that.
In a way, my name is "real" because it's a "real" nickname I've gone by since 1977. OMG now you know this "personal info" about me - and why? Only because I told you.

IT can be activated from the Administrator end to be a active choice in all the UCP's so an admin does not have to be involved everytime you change it. The added advantage is it provides another mild level of security if people trying to hack do not know the login name and only know the user chosen Nickname.
Re: Name Change
This is just a policy thing. So, perhaps bigWham and rdsrds2120 can give this a yes or no?
Re: Name Change
Bump.
Had users ask about this in chat today. This is a win win if it can be done. Money for CC, less multis to hunt and happy users.

"just a policy thing"... translation: "no other owner has done it for pretty damn good reasons, maybe this will slip past the new guy... hey, and while we're at it, can we get a surrender button?"
hold your breath on this one... pick a good user name when you start and you don't have to worry about it... the black jesus has spoken...-Jésus noir
p.s.-yes, the current name change policy works. suck it up, cupcakes.

You can slightly adjust your name at the moment but not totally change it. For example, I went a few days with a heart at the end of my name and then changed it again to have a star at the front too, until reverting back because inviting me to games was apparently a pain.

this would also be helpful when people put up retirement threads, change their minds and then have to go through the embarrassment of actually not leaving... a simple name change could be like the witness protection plan...-Jn

Re: Name Change
- I like the idea, but think $10 is not enough to deter quick name changes, I think a one time for $20 is better, I mean, someone with enough $$ could change their name once a week is ridiculous. I understand someone wanting to change name or maybe even capitalize existing name because most people who join don't think to capitalize a name, I use to be magnusgreeol in Pokerstars, Every time I looked at it I wished I capitalized the M & G, so when I signed up here I had it dead set in mind to capitalize, hence forth MagnusGreeol. Its not only about complete change, some might want to just capitalize existing name. The cost,,$20 bucks ") GL guys, hope it passes through for has.

I don't understand the programming thing here, since everything that asks for a username seems to ask for the user ID #. As long as that remains standard, why should it matter?
