Do you consider Latter Day Saints (Mormons) to be Christians

Post by Nephilim »

saw something on CNN last nite about this and i would like to know people's opinions....

please, if you are LDS or even if you're not, don't take offense at the ignorant comments that are sure to come in this thread. i would recommend ignoring them. those of us that want to have a marginally intelligent discussion can do so, and let the kids type away with the jibba jabba, don't let 'em bother you...

Alright, the difference. A "true" Christian is one who is born again. Jesus said, "Unless a man be born again he can not enter the Kingdom of God." There may be in fact a Mormon who has accepted Christ as his/her savior. But that being said, the Mormon as well as Jehovah Witness religions (and others) teach a false doctrine and where they "claim" to be Christian are not. A common word to describe such religions is cults.

I'm not Mormon, but from what I understand Mormons believe in the words of the Bible, both Old & New Testaments. In addition to that is the Book of Mormon.

Mormon is also recognized as an "official" religion. I don't know, but I'm guessing Mormons would find it quite offensive to refer to them as a "cult".

The Moonies & those nutcases in California that committed mass suicide thinking a spaceship in the tail of a comet was coming to save them are cults.

I don't agree with them at all, but they believe in christ, and shouldn't anyone who believes in christ be a christian? technically?

but looking at the stereotype set by the word christian, probably not...

They believe in the words of the Bible and the Book of Mormon. (false doctrine) If you take "the truth" and add "lies" to the truth the truth becomes corrupted.

No doubt they would be offended. There are many "official religions". Jesus said HE was the "way" the "truth" and the "life".

To static_ice Scripture states, "You say that you believe in God? Good! Even demons know there is a God and tremble!"

Jay, the Mormons I know are way more in touch with Christ then any people who solely rely on outdated, incorrectly translated gibberish.

And I'm sure there would be many people out there that would call your divergent tangent of faith a CULT.

Faith is faith. It is not fact and the word truth does not apply to it.

That is your right, and it is not my intention to try to take your faith away from you.

The reason I made this somewhat belligerent comment (and I appreciate your restrained reply), is that your argumentation essentially boils down to: 'Mormons aren't christians because I don't believe they are'. That is not an argument.

A Christian is someone who has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Denomination plays no part, however, a church that claims to be "Christian" can teach a false doctrine which the Mormons do.

Firsty - Let us not forget that Christianity began life as a Jewish sect (denomination or 'cult' in your terms). Now - there are hundreds of sects (denominations or 'cults' in your terms) within Christianity. They will all argue over what it means to be a "true" Christian but the fact remains that they are all Christian denominations...

Ebionites
Gnostics
Arians
Eastern Orthodox
Oriental Orthodox
Syriac Christianity
Eastern Catholic
Western Catholicism
Protestantism
Anabaptism (including Amish, Hutterites, and Mennonites)
Lutheranism
Calvinism
Anglicanism
Baptist
Methodism
Evangelicalism
Fundamentalism
Unitarianism
Liberalism
Adventism
Pentecostalism
Latter-Day Saints
Christian Science
Jehovah's Witnesses
Unity Church
Restorationism
Congregationalists
Apollinarians
Montanists
Cathars
Iglesia ni Cristo
Christadelphians
Christian anarchists (yes - that's right - Christian anarchists)
Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
New Thought
Mandaeans
Essenes
Rastafari movement (at a stretch)

Of course there are hundreds more than that. Most of the sects will claim that they are the 'true' way but none can prove it. The fact is that they are all Christians.

What I find amusing is the infighting that goes on within religions - the 'truth' seems to be very flexible

Whatever 'mainstream' Christians think, they still base their teachings and practices around Christ and, therefore, are 'Christian'. They are still a religious denomination with Christ at the centre of their beliefs. However 'cultish' it may seem, there is no denying this. You can take your definition from the Bible if you wish, but it was a definition applied by the Greeks and Romans, and if they were around today they would be applying it to Mormons too. Acts 11:25 - 'The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.' - They were called it, it was not a name they invented.

They can't be considered Christians.

Post by luns101 »

No, they are not the same as Christians.

Mormons believe that Jesus was Lucifer's "spirit brother". Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God, one member of the trinity. He is co-equal with the Father & Holy Spirit.

Mormons believe that Jesus was a procreated being by God the Father (who they call Elohim). Christians believe Jesus is eternal and has no beginning.

Mormons believe that they can one day be gods themselves. Christians believe they are meant to worship God, and will never attain that status.

Mormons believe that Adam entered this world with Eve, one of his wives. Christians believe that God created Adam and Eve.

There are so many other differences as well.

Personally, I could never figure it out either. This was a good basic question to start a thread. However, I know a certiain race-pimp in NYC that says the real Christians will sort it all out - so we'll know soon enough.
