Disgraceful.

Disgraceful? What experience of her policies have either you or scotty had to endure?

She destroyed the British coal industry, putting thousands directly out of work, hundreds of thousands indirectly out of work. Entire communities ruined and then helped the trade deficit into the red by importing cheaper coal.
If you are living in a country like Japan with little to no natural resources, then sure, import what you need. But if you have coal in your country, then it's far better to pay your countrymen to dig it out of the ground, than to make them unemployed.

Sure, the opencast mined coal from Germany and Australia is a lot cheaper, but did we get cheaper energy? Did we f*ck.

She privatised the utilities based on the claim that the private sector runs things more efficiently. Which is total bollocks because now virtually every energy company is based overseas and a private sector company is there to make a profit.

Where did all of the money go that these private companies paid to take over running the utilities? I have no idea... None of it seemed to filter down to the average person in Britain.

She decided to sell off the social housing with massive discounts to the lucky few who could afford to buy their council houses. None of that money was reinvested in building more social housing.
The repercussions of that piece of legislation are still with us now. House prices rocketed beyond the reach of normal people. The shortfall of social housing was filled by buy to let landlords, charging rents to a council that cost more than before.

So what she did to this country was to make housing, water, electricity, and gas (basic living requirements) more expensive.

So if I come across as disgraceful, please excuse me, but this bitch fucked up this country for the majority, whilst making a select few very very rich.

When Diana died, people threw flowers on the bonnet of the hearse.

When her hearse drives down the road, expect a lot of dog shit, bottles and bricks to be thrown at the hearse.

Got any sauce on any of those claims?

At least she stuck to her principles and accomplished her goals, whatever you think of the morality of those goals (which pretty much comes down to a class divide for the most part)

Just look at Greece now - imagine they'd had a leader willing to stand up to union pressure that spiralled the public wage bill so far out of control it was a major factor in bankrupting the country.

Yup, and some reinvent history by painting favorable pictures of politicians who belong to their own ideology (e.g. state socialists and FDR, non-Venezuelan 'left-wingers' and Hugo Chavez). If the politician is of a different ideology, then they'll cast their feces on the canvas to compensate (Pedro and Thatcher is my guess).

I like that Cher fans were confused for a while, since #nowthatcherisdead was trending...which can be read as either: Now that Cher is dead // Now Thatcher is dead.

Good for you for being isolationist and not taking part in engaging with global political discussions. I take it you won't be commenting on anything to do with North Korea, or Afghanistan, or Iran either?

Correct, except as it relates to the United States being involved with those countries. Also, I think you're confusing the word isolationist and the phrase "not being an asshole." Brits that comment on US politics are being assholes. Brits that don't comment on US politics are not being assholes; they aren't isolationists though.

I think there's a difference between commenting/giving a point of view , and preaching. Those who preach about politics where it doesn't affect them certainly are assholes.

Maybe nobody realizes it, but in the future Historians will declare this as the end of the Pax Brittanicus, hundreds of peaceful years that corresponded with the height of British power.

As an Aussie having his say, yes she was disgraceful. She destroyed whole communities, sold off a lot of the national assets and changed the UK from a modern industrial nation to a service based economy.

We now have the worst Prime Minister in History for Australia: Juliar Gillard..think the Iron Lady was bad, she had nothing on this red head.

Then we have the Kiwi leader Helen Clark, I'm sure some from New Zealand would like to tear her apart.

Overall though I think Peds comment of rot in hell is pretty harsh, considering where British politics is today.

Just my 2 cents,

R.I.P Margaret Thatcher for you achieved more than any other women in politics be it good or bad.

'Whatever else may be true of her, Thatcher engaged in incredibly consequential acts that affected millions of people around the world. She played a key role not only in bringing about the first Gulf War but also using her influence to publicly advocate for the 2003 attack on Iraq. She denounced Nelson Mandela and his ANC as "terrorists", something even David Cameron ultimately admitted was wrong. She was a steadfast friend to brutal tyrants such as Augusto Pinochet, Saddam Hussein and Indonesian dictator General Suharto ("One of our very best and most valuable friends"). And as my Guardian colleague Seumas Milne detailed last year, "across Britain Thatcher is still hated for the damage she inflicted – and for her political legacy of rampant inequality and greed, privatisation and social breakdown."'

Agreed... I suppose I could have been more specific, but I was making a tongue-in-cheek sort of joke to crispy.

I heard Terrorist Mandela™ is just getting out of a terrorist hospital. He probably heard Thatcher was on the way out, and decided to stick it to her by getting slightly better.

Erm...

1) John Key has been our prime minister since 2009

2) [Blatent showing off tone] We tend to like our politicians because we try not to elect idiots; sure we give 'em plenty of crap but the worst offender was Muldoon in the 70's with "think big" - and that wasnt killing people but just building a couple of over priced dams and investing in some retarded industries (protip: not a good idea to import car parts from Japan, build them, in NZ then export them back to Japan). Even the rightwingers call her Aunty Helen, much like I dont really have a problem with JK (though he is a swarmy git).

When judging Thatcher's legacy we must not forget that, for all her faults, she did help develop soft-serve ice-cream.

So, on balance, can you really say her life had a negative impact on humanity?

I have no intention of debating with you about her political or economic policies. Those on the right tend to say "Look at the mess we were in before!", while the left more often than not will say exactly the same about the state of the country after she had left office.

So it is pointless to get into all that here.

My issue with your comments is about common decency. A woman has died, some will be in mourning, and I find it completely unacceptable to write such things about a democratically elected politician.

You know I absolutely detest Gordon Brown. But if he died tomorrow I wouldn't rejoice. I would think about his family and show my respect.
