Strategy for 1 on 1
Hi there,
I really only play one on one with a friend, usually with no spoils and fog. Is it really only on the dice as it appears to us? Or are there any tips you could give me to help me gain the edge?
Thanks

Re: Strategy for 1 on 1
Which map(s) do you play? The answer depends a lot on the actual map.
On a small map like Doodle Earth to begin and to have good dice at the first throw is a huge advantage, but if you play maps like Poison Rome (especially trench) luck is not sooo important (except you have an awesome initial deployment or have bad/good luck consequently every single turn
).
Hint: "Trench" generally lowers the influence of luck, because you cannot wipe away one country after another with good luck in one turn.

This is fully untrue, in trench on normal maps 1v1 the starter's advantage and the importance of the drop is way larger than normal.
Make sure you read the legend always very carefully and understand how the maps works before you do your turn.
In 1v1 on normal maps you have to do three things:
1. Get his territorry count under 12-15-18 or any like that so he deploys less than you.
2. Make sure he doesn't get any bonuses
3. Attempt to take bonuses that are hard to break.
(Side note by 3, unless the chance that you can keep your bonus is large or on very large maps, don't take (too m)any neutrals to gain a bonus)

Re: Strategy for 1 on 1
Thanks for the replies. We usually play Classic, World 2.0 or First Nations of Americas. My opponents often tend to be extremely aggressive on their first goes, attacking a lot of 3 troops v 3 troops situations. What would be your strategy for this? Would you tend to gather troop numbers on regions or all out attack?
Re: Strategy for 1 on 1
At first I want to say that I play team games most time, so I am no specialist for 1 vs 1.
3 vs 3? I would let 'em and look at the army and region count at the end of every turn and be happy
In fact I would deploy to provoke more of this!!
3 attacking armies vs 3 defending armies: 20,61% probability that the attacker wins... --> 79% for the defender (= you!!)
Don't let them make you nervous. Just look at the key numbers (army count, region count, deployment) and stay patient. I don't know how many games I've just won because of patience, waiting for the right time and then ...

One of the best maps for 1v1 without massive advantage for territories (like classice) is to play on ww2 poland.

Attacking 3v3 will result in a lot of losses. I would definitely take advantage of their mistake by dropping 1s on my 3s to make 4s. Always attack with no less than 4, and never leave less than 2 on a territory that is in contact with the enemy. Avoiding the 3v3 situations will increase your win rate regardless of what other strategies you follow. This is mainly a game of statistics.

Re: Strategy for 1 on 1
I think basically the best strategy is to control yourself when it comes to bad dice. Probably this is where some extraordinary players excell. Stay calm and be patient.(i do this mistake many times, and i regret)
Dont play in maps where the starting deployement is over 3. Normally big maps give a great advantage to the one who starts. Also very small maps like luxemburg are not advisable.
Copenhagen is a good example of a balanced map to play a fun 1vs1. There are plenty more. Just go and dicover a few together with your friend
Off course you will allways depend on dice , like in every map or settings. You have to roll them every turn

Forget continent bonuses unless there's no neutrals to clear out. Just go for territories, keep him at 3x-1 if you can, and you'll eventually come out on top.

i dont know anymore the last time i succedede with 6 vs 3
even ( my logic) 6 should beat a 3 easy, it is not working anymore
have any changes been made , i am not aware of
is it now better to attack 4vs3 on this site
well thanks for the info
since i didnt dare to attack a 4 vs3 anymore, but obviously this stupid things is working
so a 5 vs 7 succeds, a 6 vs 7 too,

The odds of winning a 5 v 7, 6 v 7, 4 v 3 and 6 v 3 have not changed and never will change as long as the same current system for rolling attacking and defending dice are not changed. Do you use the battle odds calculator? http://gamesbyemail.com/Games/Gambit/BattleOdds
Check it out, and don't be superstitious. Risk is a game of math and odds not sheer luck, coincidences and superstitions.

With firefox and greasemonkey, you can install a basic version of what that site tells you right on your game screen. Just head over to tools and enhancements forum and look up Assault Odds plug-in

Re: Strategy for 1 on 1
I have a question...for us old timers from the board game...do the dice follow those rules. Attacker 1 Die 2 troops 2 die 3 troops 3 die 4 or more troops
Defender 1 die 1 troop 2 die 2 or more troops.............DEFENDER WINS TIES
If they DO use those rules we grew up with it might help you understand what the inner workings are.

Attacking:
If you have a 2 on a territory you roll 1 dice
If you have a 3 on a territory you roll 2 dice
If you have 4+ on a territory you roll 3 dice
Defending:
If you have a 1 on a territory defender gets 1 dice.
If you have a 2+ on a territory defender gets 2 dice.
Defender wins ties.
