While settlers is fun, Small World is a better alternative.

I played Settlers a lot, way back. But it got to where it was all anyone was playing, and I just got bored with it.
I have never got bored with Risk.

That was a big seller when I had my shop, and it was so pretty that nobody ever seemed to realize it has no strategy whatever.

Settlers should've been moved to number 1 and Diplomacy should've been the replacement for RISK.

Settlers is much more like Monopoly than RISK and Diplomacy is pretty much RISK minus the randomness.

Hardly.
Risk is terrible.
I'd like to go over why Risk is terrible and Settlers is great, but I really don't care to waste my time on it.

What? I'm agreeing with you. I love Settlers.

Oh. I thought we were talking in the context of which games are awful.
Army of GOD wrote:Maug, in every Settlers game you play is there always a shortage of brick? That seems to hold true literally every single game.

Yes, but I mean it's only important early on, anyway... So... shrug. Strategize as you will to compensate for the early lack of it, I suppose. (I often times go for an abundance of one resource along with a port that corresponds to said resource.)

I saw some guys play Game of Thrones the board game... and it seemed a bit complicated. Didn't feel like trying to keep up or figure it out, unfortunately.

It`s a great game. Though I haven`t actually had the chance to crack open my copy of it. I`ve played it on a friends copy a number of times.

Me and my friends have a massive game collection. They're scattered throughout different houses, so I can't pic them but will try to list later.

Also, Game of Thrones a friend of mine has. I friggin hate it!

When I first played it, I was upset that I couldn't invest in armies and raid other people's resources. :(

I`ve played a couple versions. The newer one (tv show tie-in) isn`t as good as the older one.

Twilight Imperium is awesome. There is a game con at the school every year and I used to always play RPGs. I accidently stumbled into an Imperium game and now that is all I play there every year.

Zombies, Ticket to Ride, Puerto Rico etc all good games.

I would post my collection but a) a lot of it is RPG books, approx. 50% of which aren't at my house b) most of the games are true grognard war games c)i dont have a decent camera.

Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride, both great games.

Smallworld, like don't love.

Can't believe they didn't include Candyland in 10 worst!!

My daughter still chides me for admitting I cheated by stacking the deck!! (I just wanted to end it someday)

Army of GOD's top five:
1. Settlers of Catan
2. Diplomacy
3. Axis and Allies
4. Scrabble
5. Monopoly

Monopoly is a great game especially if you can manipulate. I imagine playing with BBS would be fun.

macbone wrote:So, Luke McKinney over at Cracked.com posted a new article, 6 Board Games That Ruined It for Everyone.

From the piece:

Luke McKinney wrote:Risk is worse for family game night than incest. It simulates all the boredom and relentless repetition of trench warfare, but at least people really dying on the Eastern Front wished they were home with their beloved family. You are home, and now you hate the bastards.

The worst part of Risk is victory by excruciation. A well-designed game has tactics and skill building to a climax, a thrilling race to victory, and when someone has clearly won, it's because the game is over. In Risk, someone can win hours before it ends, and they will not let you just admit it and leave. They spent hours carefully planning this victory, and by God you are going to sit there and patiently lose for just as many hours so that they can enjoy it properly. They've turned having fun into a zero-sum game.

This is the same psychopath who can be in control of two-thirds of the entire world and still whinge about how unfair it is that people are ganging up on them. The one who insists that there are more tactics than "Take Australia and try not to succumb to dice-rolling repetitive strain injury."

Most of this is pretty spot on. =)

Was going to say the same. I can tell he's played the game and know how it usually works. Not sure why he compare it to incest. Incest is loving your family members a little bit too much, RISK is all about hate. Don't see the connection between the two.
For the record I'd choose incest with my smoking hot cousin over playing RISK with her anytime. Closer family members however...... Let's get the board out.

I feel left out because I've never played most of these games. I pretty much only played chess and monopoly, and being from a small family meant that monopoly wasn't that exciting, 'cept that either my sister or I would steal from the bank if nobody was looking and my dad was relentless and without mercy. Our board was used, too, so about half of the buildings were pennies or nickels.

Risk was always the most fun when I was in high school. That was the best, having a few drinks and arguing over who was ganging up on whom, breaking alliances and whatnot. Games usually ended in somebody being quite mad. So for my money I'd have to say Risk just for the atmosphere it can bring out.

We used to play Hardball Monotony in University. It was $5.00 a game to play, winner took the pool.

I have lots and lots of games.
I'm a bg fan of the "Mystery RUmmy" games (Jack the Ripper, Murder on the Rue Morgue, etc), and Citadel when it comes to card games. For a light-hearted board game, one of my favourites is Mole in the Hole, and for a longer session, I like the Empire Builder train games - EMpire Builder, British Rail, India Rails, etc.
