It's true! A friend of mine's younger brother's babysitter used to smoke it, and now she's in jail.

No, that's from beer.

Well it is against the law to possess, consume, distribute and grow marijuana. Therefore anybody who smokes it, has it, grows it or sells it is a criminal.

I was sentenced to 8 years for cannabis and 6 months for paraphernalia if that proves anything.

This really depends on where you live. There are many places that have decriminalized the use, and possession of marijuana. Some have even legalized it completely.

I don't believe anywhere has legalized weed. Portugal permits people to have up to an ounce, which effectively legalizes it. But if you are talking about Washington and Colorado, you may find that the federal government has their own opinions about it.

855,000 arrests for weed last year in the US, so please don't say it's legal.

For further edification on the issue:

Nations could withdraw from international drug control treaties, but they would almost certainly continue to face great pressure to comply with their provisions. As of January 1, 2005, 180 nations belonged to the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. The international drug control bodies exert a powerful influence across the globe, preventing even reform-minded nations such as the Netherlands from completely legalizing cannabis. Furthermore, development in the Netherlands has turned in direction of a more restrictive drug policy for cannabis.

And further along the wikipedia article states:

United States officials have used their influence in the past to dissuade other countries' delegations from even proposing drug reform.

and how many of those ended up with a court date, fine, and probation? Not trying to minimize your point, but I think you are over-maximizing it.

I'm for decriminalization. Get the government out of it. Just let it be Free! Get out of our way and let America be America

PS, I don't know how many were brought to court, fined, penalized. But the point does remain that it can cause serious damage without any of that. My cousin was kicked out of the Army for smoking on his last day of training with a dishonorable discharge. That followed him until the Iraq war, when he was given the option to enlist in order to have his record cleared. Another cousin was in the reserves when troops began to be withdrawn. A simple way for the government to rid itself of thousands of soldiers was by doing piss tests which they hadn't experienced previously and this lead him to a dishonorable discharge.

While not all 855,000 arrestees face the full force of the criminal justice system, it does leave a mark. It leaves a mark on the police arrest records which help them get promoted, it leaves a mark on the people who get arrested and it leaves an ugly mark across the face of America.

The prohibition of marijuana was done with no medical advise taken and several studies conducted by the government since have been ignored. Anslinger, after getting marijuana criminalized in America, went on to get it criminalized in the UN and it is a condition of many treaties that foreign governments legislate against, prosecute and penalize users, growers and distributors. Though in most countries, the crackdown on marijuana is incomparable to that of the States, it does create black market income and an excuse to build a police state in those that choose to use it as such. For example, ten years ago, Thailand, a well-known place to go and chill, suddenly started summarily executing possessors of marijuana in the streets. More than 3,000 people were killed for having weed in their possession. Many children were killed in the process. When I used to go to Thailand and buy big bags of weed up north almost all the people I saw there had a little leather pouch and a small pipe. The pouch had three compartments, one for tobacco, one for weed and one for opium and they would switch between them. As such those villagers were for a brief period subject to execution without trial.

The States is the main protagonist for this international war on drugs and it is an embarrassment to most citizens. Many people think the War on Drugs failed, but what if it didn't? What if it were considered a success by some and that is why we continue to pursue it?

We can make light of the criminality of cannabis all we want, but it is very illegal and those 855,000 Americans last year were arrested, not warned or fined but brought to jail and faced a criminal charge. It is one of the few excuses that police have to stop a pedestrian on the streets and ask him to undergo a search. I believe that you are a strong defender of constitutional rights and can see that drugs have been one of the main excuses used to overrule right of search and seizure. It was enacted against the constitution by using a loophole that congress can tax. A marijuana tax was passed and no tax stamps were issued, thereby allowing it's illegality.

bah, I used to smoke a lot when I was a teenger/student, and I started losing interest in this. I don't mind smoking a few puffs when there is something turning around, but I haven't bought in ages.
I'd say at least 50% of the youth here in france are ocasional smokers. Law isn't too cool about it here. Depends on the cop who arrests you with something and the quantity. If you clearly have something just for personal use, you don't act like an idiot and the cop is not an asshole, he'll just take it from you and let you go.
