wear for a period and if you see an improvence you can get rid of them.

i had the same problem at first, after a few years of hard video playing, i got my pc and sometimes my vision got blurry. you should try to buy a protection screen for you monitor, it helpes a lot.

well the reason I'm scared is because of
1 the cost (I'm not rich)
2 I feel like I wasted the excellent eyesight I had as a kid
and 3 I'm pretty sure I'll be looking at screens for a career too.

most of the time I'm at school (and in the future work), so I can't go carrying around a monitor screen everywhere I go...

I'm not a professional, but from what I know, the eye your brain does not rely on deteriorates completely at some point and the brain will block it and simply ignore it rendering you blind in 1 eye.

That's not a professional opinion however, you should do some research or consult an optometrist.

edit: Well after doing a bit of reading in wikipedia the syndrome i was referring to, cannot cause blindness in any case, but it could fairly f*ck up your vision in said eye.

Ermmm, I assume you've already seen an optician, static_ice?? If you haven't, I'd get there pronto.

Anyway, I think the idea that computer and video screens cause eye deficiencies is an urban myth. People used to blame short-sightedness on too much reading, but I don't think there's ever been any evidence for it.

Big frickn' deal. Like a bad eye is that much of a crisis. Think about it. Would you rather have a bad eye or a bad leg?

Bad leg, 100% of the time. Hell, I'd give a whole leg to save an eye.

Plus, I'm still slightly disturbed that someone who apparently has recently started to rely completely on his left eye hasn't said anything about seeing an optician. Never mind worrying about whether you might get glasses or contact lenses. Jeez.

Ya, I know I will never get blind in my right just because I use it less, but yeah, it will only get blurrier, and eventually it will affect things like my driving...

No, I haven't seen an optician...you're right I should...(I procrastinate way too much). And about screens being an urban myth, Those screens are the only reason I can think of for my eyesight going wacko...

...umm...bad leg...That's like asking would you rather be blind or in a wheelchair...go ask max I think he would rather stay in his chair...

well, I guess I lied...I don't completely rely on my left eye, my right eye still sees colors...but just to give you an idea, If both my eyes were at the level that my right is now, I could not go through the day at all...
but yeah, you should be disturbed...I'm a huge procrastinator and what's more, I can't even remember to tell anyone...I only remember how bad my sight is when I need it at school or somewhere important, not at home with my parents (except homework, but I have my privacy there...)

If this is the case, the deterioration of your eyesight could well be genetic and not caused directly by staring at your computer screen, although it may exasperate the problem (but then even someone with perfect vision may experience similar temporary side-effects to those you have described, after prolonged exposure to a VDU etc).

My own case is actually not that dissimilar. Pretty much all of my blood relatives suffer from myopia (short-sightedness). So when I managed to reach the ripe old age of 13 without needing specs, I thought I'd been spared. But gradually my vision began to deteriorate until the inevitable happened & I was prescribed glasses. I managed to get away with not wearing them at school for another couple of years (by making sure I always sat near the blackboard or a least next to someone whose notes I could copy!), and then, thank goodness my Dad treated me to contact lenses, which I've worn ever since.

Contacts generally do work out more expensive than glasses, but now you can order them online, direct from suppliers, it's really not that big a drop in the ocean - I spend far more on pubbing/clubbing it in a month!.

Finally, whatever the cause of your problems, the most important thing is that you see a qualified optician. Regular checkups are advisable for anyone, as changes in the eye can be a warning sign of other health problems, including diabetes, heart disease & liver dysfunction. But with your family history and the nature of your college work, I'd say they are imperative.

Oops - didn't mean to make my reply so long, hope it helps though. :)

If your eyesight sucks, then you need to get glasses. My family has terrible eyesight, but I wouldn't wear my glasses. Long story short, I couldn't read the blackboard, read streetsigns, recognize people from 20 feet away (yeah, it was that bad), or do pretty much anything else. So I finally got contacts and can actually see.

Oh yeah, and if you don't start wearing glasses now, you'll have to when you get your driver's license or when you want to get it renewed.

I only just got glasses, about a month ago, and it's so much better. Sure I was weird with it for a few days, but then I just got used to it and I can actually see things clear. If you want contacts, get contacts, if you can.

Good luck with that, I hope it doesn't get too bad.

No I wasn't talking about being blind. Being blind isn't the same as just having bad eyesight. But anyways I guess I just forgot that everyone here spends too much time on the computer to remember what walking feels like anyways.

first of all, thank you for believing that I am in college  I'm in high school (graphic design is the class).

second, I know I won't get diabetes, heart disease or liver dysfunction any time soon, (my genes are good for something!)

third, yes, you are right. I really need to see an optician...and if I have to I'll buy the contacts with my own money (online of course).
