If you look at a graph of temperatures in the last 10,000+ years, you'll see just how wrong you are. Pre 20th century the graph looked like a ziggzagging line going upward. Since the Industrial Revolution, Temperature has gone WAY up.

Well if you know your prehistoric history you'll know that scientists believe the world's natural climate change occurs at varying speeds. I can't remember the source, do a google if your desperate I guess, but present rates are not the fastest that temperatures have changed in the earth's history. Either way, I'm not arguing that humans are having some of an effect, just not as much as has been portrayed by the media.

Global warming is caused by many things, the change in our orbit, the tilt of our planet, volcanic eruptions, and changes in the sun. Our planet has warmed and cooled since the dawn of life. However, man is making it worse. Since the Industrial revolution, we have been burning fosil feuls and bio mass which give off so called "green house" gasses which all absorb and emit heat.
Studies have shown these gasses have changed the atmosphere to the point where temprature, precipitation, storms and sea level are all effected.

Can't say I ever really fully understood the science behind the ice age so I can't tell you why. I know that volcanoes and asteroids can kick up enough material to blot out the sun and rend the earth very cold for years. But again, I'm not a scientist and I'm sure there are many more reasons with much greater effects.

Well the mini ice age that occured in about 1817 was caused by a volcanoe, global temp.s droped as much as 5 deg ferihient.

Oh, my favourite historically unorthodox theory comes up here!

Apparently there was an enormous volcano around Iceland in the late 1780's. The ash blotted out the sun and resulted in very poor crop harvests in Western Europe. The result was that French people (who had very inefficient farming techniques (and still do :P )) starved and blamed their king. Thus the French Revolution.

Incidentally, my other favourite theory on the French Revolution is Louis XVI's unnaturally tight fore skin that made it painful and difficult for him to have an erection. As a result Marie Antoinette got quite the reputation for fulfilling her sexual urges elsewhere, leading to her unpopularity. His inefficiency in the sensuality department left Louis weak minded, i.e. he was not a firm leader and couldn't control his subjects with the necessary strictness.
If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?

and "faster" means during your childrens lives.

Bigfalcon, I am shocked. Shocked and disgusted.
If only you displayed this level of eloquence in Flame Wars, people might take you seriously.

Anyway: Yes, global warming is natural and yes, humanity is exacerbating the problem.

And at Genius: 10 000 years is really not an adequate temperature graph. You wont even see the changes of a 10 000 uyear graph on a 800 Mill year graph, which is what should be used.

If the actual phenomen is natural, we wouldn't have been able to tell for a while if we didn't contribute DRAMATICLY to it.

A real problem human-maded.

the probelm with global warming is that when the earth heats yp it will melt the glaciers and then when they melt freah water will be dumbed in to the ocean changeing the currents that relie on salt water. and it is these currents the carrie heat around the world. then their is no heat in north and south and then the ice age happens.

one big problem is that once it starts adn by starts I mean really kicks in, we have almost no hope of stopping it. Global warming melts ice and turns it into water. Ice reflects sunlghit energy, water absorbs. Tundras will release methane, there were a few others but I can't be bothered trying to remember what they wer.

... What I find terribly alarming about this whole thing is the manner in which science has ceased being part of the debate. Global warming now has much less to do with science than it does politics. For example, find a post by somebody who questions man's role in global warming, and I know many here immediately start to think, "This guy's a Republican". Likewise going the other way as well, with "Lefty Wack-Job". Everybody's walking around with blinders on (as they do with about everything else these days).

... It's true enough that Al Gore's taking the reins of this thing has politicized it beyond recovery. I just hope we get back to looking at the real science some day soon.

Ahh, the old Tight Foreskin gambit :D This was also attributed to Peter III, the impotant husband of Catherine the Great. Some think that Catherine carried out her coup (and became one of the most famous and successful Russian rulers, finally supressing Turkey and, ultimately, cementing Russia as a major European power until the end of the Cold War) because Peter was threateneing divorce because she couldn't provide him with children, when in reality it was his own inefficiency in the bedroom.

So the Cold War occured because the poor guy had a tight foreskin.

Well, there's the greenhouse effect (been around since we've had an atmosphere, which's been a while) and there's global climate change (fairly new, brought about by ye olde homo sapiens). The Earth couldn't support multicellular life without the former reflecting solar energy back against its surface, while if we don't take some reasonably effective action soon against the latter, the ability of the Earth to support that same multicellular life might be seriously diminshed for a while.
