yeah that looks kinda what im looking for and im sure Guiscard could spruce it up...But i still feel the angle wouldnt be right due to placing of other 3d objects!
But if he could give it a go it would be much appreciated..

I think a big long dune like that shown in the India map is just gonna make it seem like some kind of big 'dyke' of sand... The desert covers a pretty huge area in this map, and I really think just a single dune would look ridiculous.
I genuinely do want to satisfy everyone here, but the poll does show the large majority of people approve of the first option, and I also believe that (in this case) I can argue that option 1 is the most fitting too.

Guiscard...congratulations on Final Forge....with regard the desert, to my eye none of the options is appealing as they don't fit in with the style of the mountains and great wall, consequently i didn't vote. here's my why....the mountains are clearly defined. the great wall is clear although just not quite the same style as mountains but very acceptable...the desert, i think, needs to be a series of differing undulating low curves similar to your mountains with shadow to the left...option 1, i think is starting to get there as I can see some undulation happening with shadow kind of stuff in the bluriness....too fuzzy around the edges. Hope this helps! Otherwise looking tremendous

OK once more I'm at a bit of a standstill...
The vote says go with option 1, the diffused borders (and this is certainly my favourite) but there are still people who want a different desert. I'm gonna have to take some time to think about what I can do at this point...

the poll was wrong in the first place becauase none of the examples look good on the map...You have put alot of hard work in this map Guiscard and it is a beautiful map...So you really need to get it right!!
Look at cairnswick comments, because i agree 100% with them

Can't you blend the two? Like have diffused borders with shading around the edge or something?

I disagree. Option 1 is clearly winning in the voting and it is most fitting with the map. It has dunes, is a desert colour and doesn't clash at all with any other part of the map. I really don't understand what all the fuss is about.

OK. I've decided after much deliberation and advice to go with the vote winner, option 1. This is personally my favourite, and I believe it fits with the rest of the map, is not overly intrusive and maintains a 'desert' feel without looking too flat or like a sandy version of the mountains. I know not everyone will be happy with this but I'm afraid there is a complete lack of consensus and I'm making this decision myself.
I've added the gobi desert label back in so as no-body is gonna get confused, and there should be absolutely no problem with it being considered a territory as there is no army circle and no army numbers are present.
Other changes that have been made are the addition of a little credit to Johloh in the top right corner and the changing of the name Fukien to Fujian, which is more accurate and widely used.
I will now post the xml and then the large and small versions with and without army numbers.
