You know what I miss?

I miss playing Mafia games where the roles were all public knowledge right from the start. Where I used to play, not only did we have at least a basic role list, but we could all privately communicate. It added an extra element to the game. You could lie, make alliances, and so on. This style led to one of the most epic final battles, with me as the Godfather VS the Detective for the game.

I played an off site game with private communication once, it was a blast.
The only problem with open setup games here is that they sometimes lead to mafia getting ousted Day One by process of elimination.
Do you happen to remember how that was avoided?

Well, you could have a role against mass-claiming. And odds are it won't happen in private. If I contact you and off to exchange roles, there is no guarantee either of us is telling the truth.

Vodean tried to avoid the "mass claim eaasy road to victory" strategy by making a rule against mass claims. I dislike that because then I can't come out and say I'm the cop, or whatever.

I think the open set-up game should allow for grey areas, such as "this role may possibly in this game" or "it's either this role or this role" like in Rodion's Power Role Draft, that game at least had a little lee-way for fakeclaims as it gave 4 unused roles that the mafia could take, which greatly helped me in my fakeclaim (altho I still got lynched )
An open setup game should give room for fakeclaims so it can't be won by just a mass claim and the "no claim" rule isn't applied to spoil the game.

I like the idea of secret alliances with other players, but as for the open set-up I dont really like that idea since there would have to be a mass claim rule and that limits the effectiveness of power roles (I guess there could be a rule about giving useful information like "I found mafia"). But as for the idea of negotiation with other players secretly, that sounds pretty awesome and I would be up for a beta round if there is one .
