You pretty much just summed up why I never get very far when trying to learn guitar. I've probably tried to teach myself guitar 6-7 over a few years, but I always end up moving on to something else because I get frustrated with it. Although, I think in my old age I've become more patient, because I'm teaching myself the violin and it's going much better.

I always knew I should've stopped playing my adventure and conquest games.

For instance, there's a lot more stretching involved as opposed to regular guitar (wider frets, strings further apart), and good rhythm is key to good bass playing.

I didn't think about it until you said that, but rhythm is one thing guitar hero/rock band should help with because that is part of how it scores.

I can't speak on the strength and stretch issues because I rarely ever played guitar after 1980. I'm not seeing how one less string factors in. You're right your rhythm needs to be good to lock in with the drums properly and it's some other things with muting.

It's a bit of discipline but I found I just needed that one thing to get me started and I really have picked up well and enjoyed picking it up since.

As far as rhythm, I can't say how much it varies between bass and guitar. I'm just starting so most of my stuff is rhythm based (I mostly learn my own strum patterns as I don't trust most of the ones I hear from others)

As far as difficulty, I've heard and kind of agree that out of the traditional rock style instruments, drum is probably the most difficult to learn especially if we're talking about learning to play other songs). there is no tab or notation to really guide you with drums you have to develop a really good sense of beat and if you're learning someone else's song you have to have a really good ear for how they are playing it.

There are drum tabs. When my friends and I had a band, our drummer had tabs. I couldn't make heads or tails of them, but they were there. I'll certainly agree that drums are hard to play though.

On a related note, Rick Allen is a fucking god.

Ok. correction on the tabs part. Still say you have to learn it more by ear than any other common instrument.

That would get buried in the mix so if you don't want any money show up and I'll even buy you a harp.

You know, this board game sounds fun: Small World.

You can watch Wil Wheaton, Grant Imahara, and some other people I don't know describe it and play it in this video.

I actually clicked on this, until I realized it was 30 minutes, not 30 seconds.

30 minutes of Will Wheaton trying to sound cool, with or without porn star accompaniment, is more than I can take.
