I've been listening to CSPAN-2 this morning, to the House Science, Space, & Technology Committee 'questioning' the White House Director of Science & Technology Policy Dr. John Holdren. Listening to some of them wax poetic about NASA and high energy particle physics while some of them (or their previous colleagues) saw it quite fit to cut / eliminate funding in order to 'reduce the budget deficit' according to public Congress records.

Whenever I listen to these Congressional hearings regarding either scientific agencies like NASA or science policy and some of the skeptical or 'lecturing' questions and comments, it just makes me want to bang my head on the desk.

How much funding for Space exploration could be generated via this proceedure?

So I've decided as a guitarist. I want to be as great a player as Stevie Ray Vaughan, as emotive with the guitar as David Gilmour and be innovative all by this time next week...I sometimes think I'm aiming too low.

Banana truck crash destroys 1745 Mass. building
By Associated Presspublished Sunday, June 24, 2012

SEEKONK, Mass. — An out-of-control tractor-trailer carrying bananas crashed into a natural gas main and ignited an explosion on Sunday morning, setting fire to an 18th-century building that housed a tavern and destroying it.

I find the best way to improve my playing is to play with a band where everyone else is way better than you. If they will have you.

I've never been able to play an instrument. I think I tried to play the saxophone in grade school, and quit after 3 lessons.

It's tough to find a good teacher who can motivate and teach a beginer well.
Try a bass the saying is it's the easiest instrument to play but is difficult to play well. Other good simple instruments are Jaws Harp and Ocarina. Have you ever tried to program a keyboard? You might be really good at that, it's more like a puzzle. You don't need any rhythem with your hands.

Well base has less strings than other guitars so yeah it's easier in that sense. Only thing harder about the bass would probably be the finger strength required (bass strings are thicker).

Part of my problem with learning is I am a bit unfocused. I really want to get good at finger picking and I want to learn barres better (I can play an F# barre but I haven't learned any others yet) and I also want to do 20 other things at the same time. The only reason I haven't tried to learn slide guitar is because currently I don't have all the accessories I need.

Less string doesn't have much to do with it, I think. There are other factors at play that make more of a difference. For instance, there's a lot more stretching involved as opposed to regular guitar (wider frets, strings further apart), and good rhythm is key to good bass playing.

You might laugh, but I've found that playing copious amounts of Guitar Hero/Rock Band games has improved my innate rhythm immensely.
