Over-Rated movies
What do you think are the most over-rated movies? Personally I think Lord of the Rings where terrible movies. They were horribly boring. I tried watching them again, and just wanted to rip my face off they were so bad.
Re: Over-Rated movies
I think the LOR series were pretty much exactly as advertised
and i didn't watch them expecting something else.
Generally... I find most movies overrated by the media professionals
who are paid to plug them on television.

Re: Over-Rated movies
Are you a fan of the books? The film-makers claimed that this was a project "by and for Tolkien fans." Part of the attraction and pleasure was in seeing how they took beloved characters and scenes, and portrayed them on the screen. Conversely, as a huge devotee of the (book) trilogy, I figured I was pretty much destined to hate the movies because "they could never match my sweet imagination" (hat tip to Paul Simon). As it is there are a number of things about which I am pissed at how they were done, so by a kind of twisted logic, the fact that I actually enjoyed watching them tells me that they must be even better than they seem to me.bedub1 wrote:What do you think are the most over-rated movies? So anyway, whether you are or are not a fan may explain, each in their own way, why you don't like the movies. Or it could just be that you're right, I'm wrong, and they're boring.
Edit P.S. about my avvy: That actually has nothing to do with liking the movies or the books in general. I liked this particular pose/action as it reflects my attitude in both the games and the discussions: "I salute you and respect you, my noble adversary. Now I'm going to chop you to pieces."
The right answer to the wrong question is still the wrong answer to the real question.

I read the books. I found them to be boring and poetic. By poetic I mean they seemed to be written in verse. You can read the entire thing while going "bump ba da dump da da bump bump bump". (Or something like that. I'd have to re-read them to get it down again). By boring I mean the plot was stupid. They could have been 1/6th as long and told a much better story.

Re: Over-Rated movies
I love you bedub.
So my daughter read the Hobbit and loved it, and was interested in LOTR. She made it quickly through the first book until the Council of Elrond and just couldn't go any further. I couldn't blame her either, that's when it started to get really bad.
I tried rereading the books (only read them once, before the movies came out) and couldn't make it past the first one.
The books suck. They really do.
However, I do think the movies were decent - because they threw out a bit of the shit that was in the book. I haven't rewatched the movies, but I saw the first two multiple times so it wasn't just one viewing.
As far as the title, I am not sure. I agree Titanic was massively overrated. I admit I did see it in the theater when it was first out (date movie!) and wasn't impressed then, and have never rewatched it.

Re: Over-Rated movies
LOTR movies arent over rated at all, they are one of the few successful adaptions of a book series and are among my favourite movies.
agreed, the movie looked terrible i hope someone will do a faithful depiction of the battle of thermoplyae

On the day the DVD of Titanic was released I was working in an optical shop in the Navy Exchange, a sort of mall on the base. Coming back from the office with my cash-drawer bag I passed a crowd of girls excitedly waiting for the doors to open so they could run in and buy it. I told them, "I'll spoil it for you. The boat sinks."Ace Rimmer wrote:As far as the title, I am not sure. I agree Titanic was massively overrated. I don't know how to answer that. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a movie that was "underrated". It would have to be some movie nobody had ever heard of, but I had seen it, and thought it was great.... That's going to be difficult, given pretty much every movie I've seen has been advertised on TV....
Can I use anything from Kevin Smith? I think his movies are great.
Oh, and I agree with you two on Avatar. If I hadn't been with a friend in the theater I would have walked out on it. (Imax 3d) (I watched it at home on my 720p 2d projector and it was much better, but still way over-rated/over-hyped)

I think I've seen Titantic once, or at least, I think I've seen all parts of it at sometime and could piece the movie together.
Haven't seen Avatar, but I do know that it has made its way to cable, so we'll see if it is just a matter of time...

Very rarely do I see new movies, unless the story is amazingly interesting or has just enough to pique my interest, or I go to a dollar theatre with a few friends, since most any movie experience is worth a dollar to me! Ha,

You should be able to piece it together from parts viewed.
people on boat = start of film
people in water = end of film

Pineapple Express disappointed me at first. After multiple viewings I've been able to appreciate for what it is but it never lived up to what my friends made it seem.

Inception.
The thing about movies is that we expect too much from them and advertisers know.
"The best movie in the last decade"
Shot of Brad Pitt slapping Tom Cruise
"The movie you've been wanting to see"
John Woo 2-second action sequence.
"The world will never be the same"
The Big Ben Implodes.
"This summer.."
Natalie Portman like eating her fist.
"The Becoming.. rated pg-15"

I liked it better the first time around. When they kill Two Socks at the end... so sad. Hell, even the second time was better. Same thing when all the samurai are gunned down; really, really sad. Third time, I started to get pretty tired of the story.

Re: Over-Rated movies
Avatar was the grown up version of Fern Gully, I think many people went to see becuase they were like "OMG James cameron hasn't made a film since Titanic, so Avatar must be good".
I personally find Pirates of the Caribbean overrated
