Isn't rugby just bastardized soccer? Dude got frustrated with kicking it all the time, picked it up and ran with it?
Problem with football: too many rules and you can't explain it to someone who doesn't speak your language inside 30 seconds. I've watched a thousand games and I still don't know all the rules. Any sport with 11 refs on the field...it's a sport that could only exist in countries with huge civil services and lots of government agencies where you have to fill out forms.
Virtue of soccer: No hands! Get ball there! You, that team! = explained.
My summary of my American Football experience... A Superbowl a year or two back.
Watching the game - rules being explained to me. Slowly beginning to understand how the teams score, what their aims are etc etc. The score is pretty even and in fairly low numbers.
I go to get a drink.
One team suddenly has 10 times more points than the other??? In the space of 5 minutes!
At this point I give up trying to understand and just watch for the violence

I absolutely love AM football, and I don't know why. I can't get into soccer, either...I've tried to watch some games, but there isn't enough scoring for me! There is a lot of skill in AM football, or everyone would be able to do it...and those guys aren't overweight...they're in better shape than you are, I'd be willing to bet. Those guys are heavy, but very little of it is fat. I don't like to watch soccer, and I still don't speak badly about it...please have the same courtesy.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if it wasn't referred to as football...

Titans
I grew up playing soccer, but moved into football as I got older. In soccer you can be athletic & just excel on the field, but for football you need more. You need discipline, endurance, upper & lower body strength, speed, to be able to see what will happen in the next 2 seconds, & vision. Football practice on the track has taught me that running 2 miles is much easier than running 15 100 meter sprints with a 40 second break inbetween each. So where as soccer is constant, people pace themselves, but in football when you are on the field it is a constant sprint with obstacles.
...but we did steal the name football from soccer

Football (the real one) does not need speed? Or upper or lower body strength? Or Endurance? Or discipline? or vision? Are you sure you actually played football?
Speed - most strikers need it, ie. henry, bellamy agbonlahor
Strength - everybody needs, especially defenders - keane, shearer, rio
Endurance - Probably the most improtant aspect, running almost constantly for 45 minutes(twice) with a quick break is very very hard. The fitter team can easily win even if they are not as good. Pretty much all top league strikers are very fit, so no need to name anyone.
Discipline - definately needed, especially defending - off side trap, running out on free kicks, man marking, zonal marking, defending crosses/corners/free kicks. ie. terry, cannovaro, schmeichal.
Vision - especially important for attacking midfielders who are playing attacking passes or through balls. strikers need it to lose defenders and create openings. ie. carrick, ronaldinho, gerrard
Also, football requires much more fitness then AM football. You get a 5 minute break after everytime someone throws a ball. That is not demanding or exhausting.

Strength-soccer players do not have to move 300 lb men or try to plow over piles of people
Discipline-if somebody goes to the wrong spot it probably won't hurt their score
Vision-Doesn't lose defenders. It is what a runningback uses to find the best hole on sweeps
After each down there is a 40 second period where the play is picked & the formation is set, if you do not do it in these 40 seconds it is a penalty. Like I said, I learned from being on the track & experience that it is harder to run 15 100 meter sprints than to run 2 miles
