Bigotry
Should somebody be banned for bigotry (homophobia, racism, anti-semitism) even IF it is in Flame Wars? Discuss.

Yes. Perhaps not a permanent ban, maybe just a ban on the forums for a week or two for a first offence but if its persistent after that then a permanent forum ban.
Whether this kind of bigotry you describe is in flame wars or not is immaterial, none of this is acceptable in modern society.
People of all different backgrounds use this site and they should all feel welcome. Do we really want a site where certain sections of society feel excluded from? I for one love the international multiculturalism in the forums, it’s a great place to speak to people from all over the world with many different opinions – why ruin it for some narrow-minded bigots?
As for flame wars – well a joke is a joke and people can get away with stronger language and sexual references here than in the social lounge, but when that jesting goes over the line – and there is a line – that person should get a clear warning from the mods (and hopefully the community here too) and if they don’t apologise - a ban.
You’re right to bring this point up hecter, often I am disgusted at the outright racism and homophobic attitude displayed by some posters.

Someone holding entrenched preudical offensive views of people not like themselves.
Including, but not exclusively: racism, sectarianism, sexism.
Will that do for a start?
There are those people, like yourself, who have the ability to disagree without insulting their opponent, but the religious debates can be downright offensive at times. How do they figure in to this?

what do the rules of the site say
I voted YES because...Theres too much worldwide diversity on this site to allow it, why they do is beyond me....
BUT, on the other hand,
Banning actually would depend on the site rules....
if nothing in the site rules they read BEFORE signing up prohibits this, & no amendments to the existing rules prohibiting this AFTER somebody joins...then i don't see how they can enforce a ban...especially when they allow it in the Flame Forum....
It tells me its allowed by the site owner(s).
They should spell out the rules as to what can and cannot be said anywhere on the site...
personally..I don't even go into the flame forum...so I don't even know what goes on in there...but I've read other posts about it..and it doesn't seem like a nice place to go into

If it didn't say anything offensive, it would just be in General Discussion, Callouts, or Social Lounge. Those forums are already pretty liberal in terms of what you can get away with. If you can't do the "really bad" stuff in Flame Wars, they shouldn't even have the forum. I don't go there, but hey, if other people want to they can go right ahead and get their daily dose of vitamin angry nerd.

For me insult is an insult and joke is a joke. Why is it worst to say something nasty about someones belonging to a certain group than saying something nasty about someones mom?
My personal approach is using racistic bashing only towards my own race (AKA. Vanilla townies

i agree with mandy, i am not a bigot or homophobic or anything else mentioned, but you have to take it into context of what the person is saying. some people are out of order for what they say about certain things. like mandy says, is a persons mother not a person like a jew or a gay or a black person. there seems to be different rules for different kinds of people, it is politically correctness gone mad.

Well it's just that when I go into Flame Wars, I don't want to hear racial slurs, or be called a Jew by somebody who thinks it is insulting. The person can say what ever they want about my mother, probably because they will never see her on this site, let alone in real life. But they will see homosexuals, blacks, girls and Jews on this site, and they could be really offended by that. I am offended by those things, and I am a straight, white, athiest male.

I tend to look at homophobic, racist, sexist etc. stuff like this:
If I said it in a crowded room filled with reasonable and educated people of all nationalities, races, sexual persuasions etc. would someone punch me in the face for it?
I can only think of one comment I made (whilst drunk) which may have had that effect, and I apologised for the severity of it later.
Guys like Gerzan and Reichzealand would be covered in bruises.

i voted i don't want it on here although in a mild format it could be tolerated especially if it just used light heartedly although expressing your extreme anti-semite views or proclaiming that all muslims support mass murderers and that half the prophets were dirty pedophiles etc is not on. not mentioning any names here Gerazan but i think this is not the place for that sort of talk. a KKK meeting would be much more appropriate
