[Abandoned] - Finnish Winter War map

Post by tseepra »

Newmap based loosely on the Finnish Winter War of 1939-1940, fought between the Soviet Union and Finland.

Image

Current problems:
The continent army bonuses.t's hard to seperate the 7th army from the 8th army.
Not sure about the impassable borders, weather there should be more or less.

What I would like to keep in this map:
I want Finland to be easy to defend from Russia, but worth less than Russia.
I want to keep Finland blue and Russia red.

So, suggestions, comments and questions are all welcome.

There are two armies in the Kem circle, too. Center the numbers more, ditch the Scandanavia flags and the small territories. I like the idea, though. It has potential.

Color of countries are too close to each other. Reds and Blues. and yes, the numbers are kind of messed up

Awesome map so far. The only thing I'd suggest is making the separate armies (continents) more visible. You could still leave Russia red and Finland blue, but you could have like a light red, a regular red and a saturated red, and the same with blue.
Great first draft!

I like this idea ... probably because I've had it pass through my mind also. ;) Good luck!

New legend.
More clear coast.
More clear altogether.
Army circles are smaller.
No more numbers because they were messed up.

We did, and that is what inspired me to do a winter war map. Finland might have been outnumbered 4:1 in infantry and 1000:1 in tanks but we still beat off to russian invaders.

Ok, so whay I want to ask the foundry:
What should the bonuses be like?
Do you like the Swedish and Norwegian flags in the top left? (I do)
What sbould the legend be like? (the current legend sucks, tbh)
Should there be any more impassable borders (perhaps one between Eastern CMD and Western CMD?)
Should I remove the ability to attack from Estonia to Helsinki?

And also, I think the colours are distinguishable from eachohter, who thinks they should be even more different?

I want to put a title which tells the story of Finland vs Russia, but I'm a bit drunk atm so maybe next week.

The only problem I can think of would be that the continents are kinda hard to hold, as far as I can see.

i like it... :D ...but maybe have some spacific cities worth plus 1 bonus or something like that...make it a bit more of a challenge for those unlucky enough not to start on one of them.. 8)

East/West CMD is the only problem I see regarding continents.

Love this one to be honest. I forsee this one as a smaller "Indochina" style map where a 6 player game would be rugged, but this would fit beautifully as a 3-5 player. Keep up the good work... looking forward to this one already.

One small suggestion - there needs to be a Finnish flag somewhere... :)

I definitely like this map and I think its pretty good as it is, but I do have some sugestions:

Vary the colours more, (but keep them Red and Blue) so we dont have to use the continent shapes in the corner to tell what they are.

The actual regions names, rather than just CMD and X Army as the contnent names.

The bonuses probably need to be adjusted a bit.

Also, I noticed that the Hammer and Sickle are edged with blue, which makes them seem a bit odd.

Other than that, great map!

I dont know if its my screen but east and west cmd are virtually indestinguiahable to me, at first glance i thaught they were one continent
you may need to lighten one up a bit

It's going to be near impossible to read blue numbers in the blue continents. I like the rich colours, but they're not going to work... unless you perhaps make the army shadows white?

Please use the google for example with the following: "Simo Häyhä" or "Simo Hayha" for your keyboard. Also Larry Thorne (Lauri Törni) might end up with some interesting results.

I like the map a lot! Some ideas:

Maybe adding Suursaari would bring something in between Leningrad/Estonia and Helsinki/Uusimaa?

Maybe a name for the map: "Talvisodan henki" or something similar in American language

Something else maybe later when I'm not this tired...

New update, it might take me awhile to update this map because i'm in the middle of exams and moving flats.

Image

Updates:
Made the hammer and sickle more black on the borders.
The legend is new.
The colours are more varied.

Some comments:

The map is as wide as it can be.
I'm not sure how varied the colours can be anymore.

I had a few more points, but I'm drunk again...

Questions or comments are welcome and appreciated.

WOW! What beautiful improvement since the last time I checked.

I think you can take some liberties in making Narva and Meretaskov a little bigger to make those territories clearer. It's a bit clustered there right now.

The main issue right now is the text not fitting within the appropriate territories. These labels could be clearer. Also the water(ice?) between Kyme and Grendal looks like a country because it's outside borders colors match so closely with the blue land around it. It needs to be clearer that it is not land.
