Down Periscope -- I've spoken with submariners who have said it is eerily accurate in its portrayal of undersea warfare.

Aye, and if he were here he'd still be taller than Aog, make more sense than targetman and have a smaller gut than TGD. Aye, disobey and you may be banned, follow their rules and you'll survive, at least as long as CC survives. cheesy? You are just saying that cuz it's old.

The movie is special because it tells the story of tyranny and war and oppression from a different angle.

Meh, the scene you posted is retarded though. In reality that speech wouldn't convince a fly to eat shit.

There's like 3 good scenes in Braveheart, and Mel Gibson isn't integral to any of them. Best scene is Angus Macfadyen

The whole scene is great.

For some reason everyone has a British accent, I don't think there was any Russian in the movie, like at all.

The whole thing with the German sniper was a complete exaggeration. In reality he showed up and was shot 4 days latter.

The depiction Russians was awfully stereotypical, brutish, stupid ect. Also random love story that didn't add to the plot .

My favourite war movie is Platoon. I don't know how to classify most important though. The Great escape also a fav'. Is Born on the fourth of July a war movie?

By the way, not even a titter? A stifled giggle? Some modicum, no matter how meagre, of acknowledgement that my post was funny? That there was hunour there. A moment of comedy existed, fleetingly, it came and went. No?

I get nothing. Not even criticised for thinking I'm funny when I'm not? I get the worst of all things possible, of all things imaginable.

I get ignored.

The joke was good, this rant though, actually made me lol.

So, you're really not incentivizing me to acknowledge your jokes here.

The most disturbing war movie I've ever seen is Blackhawk Down. I feel like it's the most realistic and therefore may be the most important.

My favorite is The Great Escape. I'm hopeful that at some point, a bunch of high profile actors (George Clooney, Will Smith, Matt Damon, Leo Dicaprio, etc.) will get together and do a war movie in the vein of The Great Escape (but please, not a remake).

The Great Escape wasn't realistic, and for a lot of British people, was kind of insulting. It's a great movie, but it shoe-horned Americans into something legitimately impressive and tragic that they didn't do. See also U571, another good movie that sees Americans replace British troops.

Kind of like if Blackhawk Down had replaced the American troops with British soldiers, peeps might get annoyed.

Glory, Bridge over the River Kwai, Full Metal Jacket for modern wars.

Troy for ancient wars though the atmosphere of the movie in general (just because of the time period were you seriously had Achilles killing everyone) is just different than the others.

Oh dear...
Notice the word "important" in the title :-s

I'm thinking "Black hawk down" (Somalia)
Maybe "The lost battalion" (World War I)

I haven't yet seen saving private ryan or war horse, so I can't give my opinion on those.

Importance wise, probably Battleship Potemkin.

There have been many good movies listed here and it is hard to pick just one. I choose "Band of Brothers" overall for it has many elements of good and bad that happens through warfare, as well as reference to individuals and civillians.

Band of Brothers wasn't a movie, but good call anyway.

I read a really good article recently on Great Escape, can't remember where. If I find it I'll post some details.
And no, there were no Americans involved in the incident.

When you say most important, do you mean most influential?

I would say it was All Quiet on the Western Front though as an older film now, it's influence is less strong.

Nowadays in Britain people tend to look to Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan as the most powerful war films of recent decades, though I remain a bigger fan of Vietnam war films like The Deer Hunter and Platoon.
