Wall Mod v.3 update gathering

Post by AndyDufresne »

Concise description:

The Wall Mod was recently updated by Dako and the Tech Team. Based on feedback from the announcement topic, reception has been positive but there are a few other things that might make the wall even more functional. A list gathering the requests from the announcement topic are below.

Feel free to add any new ones that haven't been added, or express your thumbs up or down for those listed already. There is no timetable for when the Tech Team will get to this, but we can at least get things organized so when they want to tackle the project again, they have a clear vision!

Specifics/Details:
  • Option to turn off wall completely
  • Option to turn off wall avatars only (thus keeping forum avatars).
  • Shrink and reposition wall avatars.
  • Option to show more wall posts per page / or expand.
  • Checkboxes to delete, to save certain posts from deletion.
  • Search Wall function
  • View all posts by a user
  • Remove 'clear wall posts' link when you are not viewing your own wall.
  • Wall visibility: everyone, not to foes, friends only, nobody
  • "On top of everything post" like livejournal allows
  • BBCode buttons and Preview Button, or whole Quick-Reply plus Full Editor
  • Definable Character Limit
  • Report 'Wall Post' function like Report a Forum Post / PM

In my browsing of the phpBB site, I believe I saw a mod which displayed avatars on a wall, but made them smaller, so that they were less intrusive. Changing the layout to put the avatar beside the player name instead of above might also help, as would putting the delete button beside things rather than below.

is 'view all posts by a certain user' what you mean by 'search'

I would hope it would be broader, like the Advanced Search feature of the forums, where you can search for text or for posts by a given author. Ultimately, it would be great for a user to be able to treat his/her wall as a forum topic moderated by that user, with all that entails.

Right, I'm sure you all can determine the best way to develop a comprehensive search feature. :D

Added 2 suggestions from inside the Tech Team:

"Wall visibility: everyone, not to foes, friends only, nobody"
" 'On top of everything post' like livejournal allows"

More Wall Upgrades

Post by chapcrap »

Concise description:
  • The wall and it's new functionality is nice. I still want more because I'm greedy!

Specifics/Details:
  • A preview button.
  • A few of the tag buttons that are located at the top of PM's and thread posts.
    • Bold
    • Italics
    • Underline
    • URL
    • Game
    • Player
    • Youtube

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • It will make wall posts simpler and easier.
  • Having a preview button will allow people to look at what they are doing without making fools of themselves or having to repeat post and delete the screw up.
  • It will increase happiness all the way around!!

After testing these commands out on my wall, they all were able to work.

I know that they all work. I mean to add buttons for the tags to make them easier to use.

Especially a preview button. All the others I would like, but a preview button would be the best!

Andy, it appears that my suggestion got merged with yours. Can you add some of my requests to your OP?

Maybe the way to go with the buttons and preview features would be to have the normal wall entry like the Quick Reply feature in the forums, with a Full editor button to take you to the all-singing, all-dancing, previewable, button-laden page.

Would be great if there was an option to "limit wall post size" to prevent people from C+P-ing encyclopedias onto one's wall. In order to keep the one's wall functioning as a communications centre, one might need to have some way of enforcing a KISS rule.

As discussed via PM a report a post feature would be a great addition to the wall mod as it would be a quick and easy way to report those unwanted posts. We're all victims of wall abuse from time to time and with the forums and PMs already having report a post buttons, the wall is the only one without one!
