good ideas
The problem is that a lot of people come to the site to play a game of risk. quickly. when they realize that they can't do this (aka the format of the site) they leave and download the freeware risk software. i don't think it's punishment, and i think it would help a lot of people to understand the game better.
this is a noob speaking, but yea, every1 starts out as one, but just cuz they havent played the game here, doesnt mean they dont know how to play, maybe you should help them out a bit, and if your good at this game, then even if you partner sucks total balls, you should still be able to win, by helping them out and tell them wat is best to do, help them out sum, i mean come its a team game, if you didnt want to play with sum1 then play standard
i'm a newb and on my first 4 games... they all have deadbeats in them.
all but one game the deadbeats are my partners.
i'm guilty of the typical newb thing... dont read.. click ... join.. i wanna play
grrr i have to wait... o well.
i would have prefered to play singles to start off.
and would have been totaly cool with not being able to play team games.
i missed 1 turn in my first game cause i was busy now its on. i totaly dig this
just wish at least one of my games would move.. all th deadbeats :\
lol some of the dedbeats in my games are activly playing in other games.
maybe even a simpile thing like changing the defaulted search settings.
so when you click away to join a game you default to singles.
but i know what to look for now
sometime next year when these games finish (sarcasim for all but the Sequential triples game. i have 2 deadbeat partners lol)
i'll take my time and find good games to be involved in.

How about hiding Team games from the search criteria EXCEPT if they search with the game number? This wouldn't prevent new recruits from joining games with their friends (which is mainly why I'm against this suggestion), but would prevent them from joining random team games, just like everybody wants....

I'm a newb who hasn't finished 5 games
Out of the 4 games I've finished, 3 were singles and 1 was triples. The game where I had the most enjoyable experience was the triples. Full disclosure - it was the one game I won. However, the reason I enjoyed it was because of the fact that I had someone strategizing with me. Even if I had lost, it would have been better than the three singles losing experiences I had.
At the same time, I know that the game was enjoyable because my partner knew what he was doing. And I also acknowledge the frequently cited statistic of around 80% of deadbeats being newbs.
Still, deadbeating happens everywhere. I think if you don't want to be deadbeated on, then form a team with some people - you're the more seasoned players, so you should know more people than someone who only just recently joined... then challenge other established teams to games.
Another possibility could be newbs-only team games, though that could be disastrous because a newb won't have enough good experiences to want to stay if they get deadbeated on by other newbs.
Another could be allowing all players to make closed team games, though this is really unneccesary since the players who can make closed team games already do... and the ones who don't make them don't know enough people for one of them to be a premium member, so they wouldn't be able to make a full game anyway.
I think more game options would be best. A series of checkboxes corresponding to the different ranks to limit who could join a team game (also avoids high ranking players looking for easy kills). Though, no one would want to make games for newbs, so if somehow the admins could program the game so there would always be at least one open (starting out empty) game for only newbs (and privates?) to join

The 3 (atleast) extra reinforcements missed by not having a partner really make it hard to win. And of course there is the fact that the opponents will be getting twice as many cards.

I approve of this. As a "new recruit", though experienced with running games on other websites, I can fully understand the problem that sites have with new people signing up then leaving.
Not letting new recruits join team games is an excellent start, but referencing is a great way to get that out of the way.

Just putting in my two cents here as someone more or less new to the site and forums...
Newbies going deadbeat in a triples game is a lot more deadly then in a doubles game when you get both of your teammates dying. In a doubles game, at least the other two teams also have each other to fight, and you've only lost one person. But in a triples game, if both your teammates die, you're stuck with three other players looking at you, and more often then not you're done for.
Looking at he 'join a game' part, it also seems that seasoned players join games first, filling up the first three slots, with newbie players then jumping in the last few slots. If you happen to be also in those last three slots, in triples, and your two newbie neighbors deadbeat, well, you're in trouble.
I voted 'no newbies in team games' in the poll, but I actually believe that it should be more... well, no newbies in triples games, leave 'em in doubles games, but perhaps have a warning/posting to the newbies upon joining that they shouldn't join any team games until they're more sure about themselves on the site.

I can see the need for it..But it would be unfair to ACTUAL new recruits who are not deadbeating in team games ( *cough like me *cough* )
Perhaps restricting new accounts, and people who missed a couple of turns already as a new recruits, would be another solution?
Sounds hard to program, though....

I'm new, can't see public team games. I don't have a problem with this, but this fact seems hidden and should really be public. My buddies and I tried to set up a team game over and over (where the 3 of us would be teammates) and had no idea why none of us could find the game that the other was creating, despite the fact that I had found and joined a private team game with others. I didn't see a note about it in the FAQ either, so it wasn't until i did a search for "public triples" in the forums that I found the answer. This wasted a lot of time for us and the rule should be prominently displayed both in the rules and the FAQ.

After one of you have created the game, go to the left side of your screen.
The option "Game Finder" is there. Type in the game number, and all three of you can join, and you're in business
