Nine dead and 3 million without power before the storm reached Long Island.

I'm glad it was a slow mover and weakened in the cooler northern waters
before reaching New York. People can only hope for the best result while
preparing for the worst. Nobody can predict exactly what will happen
when a hurricane/tropical storm makes landfall.

Alot of roads flooded in Upstate NY and have heard of some places being evacuated due to collapsing dams, but wasn't close to what had been predicted the past few days. Couldnt get to work with all the roads being closed, so was a good enough storm for me...

Really? That's terrible. I didn't think the storm was that strong, when it made landfall.

It was probably people being silly and walking by the beach to see it or surfing or something.

Today was reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllly windy and rainy...Had power out for the whole day.

ANY death is, of course horrible. Still.. 9 is not very many. One guy went surfing and died early on. A lady was caught in her car. Not sure about the others. In all, for the size of the storm, pretty lucky.


EDIT.. just found out 6 died in Glen Canyon here in PA. It seems 9 was just the first day.....


Even so, I would be interested to see how the crime rate compared. Could be that fewer people died in the storm than would have from violance/care wrecks, etc on other days.

Haha, that's a good question, and it would be funny to find that less people overall die when a hurricane hits.

I'm thinking that car wrecks would increase with the increased traffic before the storm (e.g. driving around to buy more supplies than normal and/or evacuating, which leads to congested streets and highways, which are more likely to have accidents occur.

I'm not sure about burglaries, break-ins, and what not...

Over half of Connecticut lost power. On the outage map at the power company website the entire eastern half of the map was black, 81%-100% outage. Many towns were entirely without power. I'm in the northwestern corner, I wound up losing power from 7am-10pm. Not sure why the power company sent crews up my street so quick, what they fixed up here restored maybe 20 houses at the most. In the meantime the company continues to announce that full restoration may take over a week.

I hear Vermont took it hard. Overall they are saying that the warnings were apt, just that the storm did not hit everywhere they had feared it might. Of course, that was on the media that itself has been accused of over-stating the problem. Even so, I have been through enough storms to know that its FAR better to overestimate than underestimate!

And..let's not forget the 21 who died as of yesterday (maybe more today)

Scotty you always miss the point and all you can see is through your narrowed eyes. Not all people will leave on their own and not all people are able to leave on their own. For the government to respond in a responsable way sometimes it is necessary to force people to leave. This has nothing to do with freedom and everything to do with safety and the ability of the police and other public workers to do their job efficiently. Force is sometimes necessary specially when they have loonies crying for their freedoms when they are about to get hit by a hurricane. Now if you wanna talk about freedoms go start another thread. If not than please waste others time by posting nonsense in a different thread.

I don't want to force anyone to apply for welfare. Obviously it's the opposite of what you are saying it is. Forced drug tests for welfare assistance isn't any different than forced driving tests for a license. Gimme a break and stop trolling please

I know people in New England really pissed themselves for this storm. I drove through the storm on my way up to college, and it was the people that were causing more trouble that the winds or rain. widespread damage was predicted for where I was residing but all that reallly happened was a few trees got knocked over.

My uncle in Hebron CT is still without power, as is over half of the eastern side of the state. Also he received a notice in his mail today telling him that he won't be getting power back for another 4 or 5 days.

Poor bastards, I was having computer withdrawals after a few hours.
