Felt like I was sitting on a waterbed for a minute or two, and then it was done. All the Californians here are probably thinking the same thing: "noobs."

Are you serious? I don't know of any fault that stretches that far. Also, we did not feel it here in PA... and if it was the same quake, we should have.

A 5.9 is big enough to feel & cause damage to poorly constructed buildings. Its when people start talking about the 4.0 "quakes" that I roll my eyes.

Anybody hear of any damage? Without damage it's just boring. I like natural disasters! Yay for mother nature!

A crap load of my Pittsburgh friends all claim to have felt it.

2 nuclear reactors are shut down for safety reasons in VA, I think, but no damage reported yet.

Some small damage to buildings reported. Either we are just on a different fault or it was too light here for me to notice. (I might have mistaken it for a big truck or the train going by).

It was the weirdest thing; i work midnights, so i was sleeping during the day; i was awakened by what felt like my bed was shaking; i thought i was dreaming or something, so i fell back to sleep and later heard of the quake. Unreal! BTW, I am in Michigan.

You probably were dreaming code or maybe you're developing
some sort of special mental powers.

The 5.8 Quake's epicenter was northwest of Richmond (88 miles SW of Washington DC)
and is the second largest ever recorded in Virginia.

Apparently, others in Michigan have felt stuff, but I suspect it will be a different quake.

I work in Philadelphia. On the 20th floor of an office building in center city. I felt it. I was on a conference call at the time with a guy in Dallas and a guy down the street in Philadelphia. When it happened me and the guy in Philadelphia went silent. The entire building shook for a good 10 to 20 seconds. A partner came into my office and said, "What the f*ck was that?" I had a call with someone in Toronto, who also felt the quake right after. At that point, our building evacuated and we all tried to get home. I went to a bar and drank a few beers. Back at home now.

Scary shit dudes and dudettes. Many props to the west coasters who get this shit all the time. The weirdest part was we were all standing outside our building and about half an hour later, some random security guard says, "You can go back in and get your stuff... they checked the building out." I was like, "How many structural engineers that are earthquake specialists work in Philadelphia?" Anyway... scary shit.

There is a lot of talk about "fracking" causing earthquakes in the TX/AR area....do you think the marcellus shale drilling has anything to do with it?

Small earthquakes produce the most quieting sensations.

I had a similar story, where I was in a building, which wobbled like jelly for half a minute or so.

There I was, with my little world and my little worries, until Mr Earthquake came by, kicked the building, and said, "I won't crush you and your little world this time, but hey, maybe next time I will. You think about that, little guy." Then he dissipates, and that's that.

I live about 90 miles from the epicenter. I was in my car at a stop light with my wife and kids and kept looking back at them because I thought they were shaking the car, but none of them were moving. besides that I really did not feel anything. Everyone at work felt the floor shake but only for a few seconds.

I just missed it, as I was in VA this am. Left about 11am, and was in WV at the time. Too many rocks to feel anything.

Also no one posting anything about the earthquake in Colorado yesterday??

In fairness, they don't happen all the time. I can remember exactly 5 notable quakes in my lifetime out there, though a friend in the geology department used to inform us about 5.0 or so quakes all the time. Those are less noticeable than a big truck passing. In some cases, buildings are built better. Also, CA is a big state.

LOL, indeed. Even so, there are key things you can check -- cracks are a biggie, displaced lights, etc. (happen to have been one of the people who would get sent out by the Red Cross to check buildings).

OH... and apparently others in my area did feel the quake. Not sure why I didn't, unless it was when I was outside.

Wow...that is shocking. Even I am starting to believe that fracking is throwing off the tectonic plates.

I think a lot of people kind just freaked out and said they 'felt' the earthquake after it ahd been reported. I myself and my sister-in-law that both live in NC didnt feel a thing yet others in the same city said they felt it.
