Re: SteamWorks [03 Aug 2011] V26 pg.1&26 - XML done?
it's been almost 9 days since the xml was submitted and still nothing.
i find this an insult not just to me and my work but also to all the people that bothered to give feedback to this map and ultimately to the whole foundry. in 9 frickin days i could read this xml 1000 times and learn it by heart. i don't give a rat's ass and i do not wish to hear any excuses. if oliver has better things to do than check the xml then he should step down from his position and let others do it.
as of this moment i would like this to be binned/boxed/vacationed or whatever.
goodbye.

Well, Oliver has been busy with RL, which does take priority over CC. He will be back in a couple of days, so please just have a little more patience and it'll get done.

yeah right. oliver has been so busy in real life that he could only find enough time to host tournaments, work on his map's xml, roam around the suggestions forum and debate there, post on his map's thread, read the latest dispatch newsletter, check another map's xml.
to me it seems like the only thing that was pushed aside because of his RL issues is this map's xml.
interesting, huh?
could it be because i started complaining about his R&C map and from final forge and close to beta it went back to the main foundry? i really really wonder.

What's the rush?
I'd counter that instead of withdrawing your maps, you try to make a record for having the most brilliant maps stuck/waiting on CAs in production at one time.

there's no rush, it's just that the foundry can't properly function like this.
if i come with a good idea, make some nice graphics, get lots of feedback and iron out all the details the last persons i expect to delay me are the CAs. they're the ones that should speed up the process not slow it down.
i bend over backwards to implement every little idea i receive even if it's just to see what it looks like. i produce updates on a daily basis and sometimes even faster. i respond to each and every comment and try to let everybody know their contribution is appreciated. and i do all this because i want to make something run smooth and fine and produce a good map. and for what? only to have a map stuck because i can't get a xml checked in over a week? or because the draft room CA is sick and nobody can take his place?
no thanks, i'm not the kind of map maker that produces an update once a month and that still thinks his map is popular after getting 3 pages of feedback in 6 months.
everybody is complaining there's very little feedback from the community and that's why the maps take so long to be done. well i have advertised in other forums and usergroups, i've went to live chat and got suggestions for my maps and implemented them on the spot. by doing this i have proved that feedback can be gathered if you really want to. when i set my mind on one thing then i devote myself 100% to that and don't slack around. i am not a slacker.
apparently i'm not the kind of map maker that fits in this foundry. or this foundry is not the place that fits me. either way i honestly can't do this anymore. i love making maps because it's challenging and relaxing and fun but all that goes away when i have to pm the CAs to convince them to take a look at my map, or when it takes 4 days to get an answer to a pm or to see some action, when a map lingers in the drafting room or simply stands idly in the final forge.
when the foundry will be lead by persons that have the same mentality of perpetually pushing forward i will come back and finish my maps. until then the foundry is nothing more than a source of frustration.

There's still 2 maps in queue before this one for the XML checks... viewtopic.php?f=64&t=50034&start=135#p3295266

you're right. wow. so basically it's been almost 2 weeks in which Oliver has had time to:
-host tournaments, set up games and update scores
-work on his map's xml,
-post in the suggestions forum and debate there
-post on his map's thread
-read the latest dispatch newsletter
-take his turns in 9+ games.
but he didn't bother to take care of the 3 xmls waiting to be stamped. if the tournaments and the other activities are more important than his CA duties then perhaps he should step down and let somebody take his spot. or at least get another xml CA.
from the moment a map enters final forge it shouldn't be more than a week before it is uploaded to the site and available for beta.
but as it turns out it will probably be several weeks/months before the first turn is taken and the dice are rolled.

It has never been a week during the time I've been here. More like a month or two. Of waiting. First you wait 2-4 weeks for an XML stamp. Then you wait 2-4 weeks for a beta stamp. Then, at least a week for the map to be uploaded...
The FF is basically a big waiting room.
To give you some perspective... My Korea map received GFX stamp on 25.4. It went live for beta on 21.7.

i said that's how it should be.
frankly waiting for 3 months from the point where a map is ready until the point where the map goes in beta is an insult to all the people that work towards the creation of a map. this includes not just the map maker(s) but also the people that give feedback and help a map progress.
why does it take that bloody long? in 2-4 weeks i could learn all the xml features from scratch and write a perfectly good new xml. what exactly does Oliver do in those 2-4 weeks? as for the beta. another 2-4 weeks before it's stamped? the very next day a map gets the ok for the xml it should also be beta stamped and sent to lack to upload. why the wait?
steamworks reached FF in 2 months. if my next map goes at the same rate i would get a second map in FF before the first one is uploaded for beta testing and i could even start a 3rd map after the second reaches FF and be half way through that one too before the first map is available for the first beta game.
am i the only one that finds this absurd?

Re: SteamWorks [03 Aug 2011] V26 pg.1&26 - XML done?
These days, I basically just try to start a new project as soon as one hits FF, because I know as long as I'm in FF there's going to be lots of nothing to do for a while. I don't know... It's been like this since I started making maps, so I've pretty much become used to it. When Forza did the XML checks, they were generally done pretty quickly, in a few days or so... but the wait for beta was still just as long.
It seems to me that most of the waiting is because the mods don't want too many beta maps at the same time, so they're only taking new beta maps once old ones get quenched.

Re: [Abandoned] SteamWorks [03 Aug 2011] V26 pg.1&26 - XML d
I think there are two factors at work leading to the long wait times in the Forge. As natty said, there seems to be a desire to limit the number of beta maps. But also, the Final Forge has been the place to review maps for their overall quality, and there have been reviewers with valuable input who pay no attention to maps prior to this point (and rightly so, since some mapmakers don't have the stomach to see their maps through the fires). With the unification of the workshops, there may be less need for this circumspect pace, but right now, that is the rhythm of things.

Re: [Abandoned] SteamWorks [03 Aug 2011] V26 pg.1&26 - XML d
i thought we weren't supposed to interfere with the official tags.
anyway i've been reconsidering my position towards this map. i feel like i'm being egotistical here for throwing away all this work. if it were just mine it would not be a problem but zimmah took his time while he had important exams to work on the xml and by throwing this in the bin i feel like i'm disrespecting him.
i apologize for this.
please move this back to the forge.
hopefully i'll still be around to do any changes if the beta period proves changes are needed but i honestly hope it won't be necessary.

I hardly complaint about anything here on CC, apart from the dice. But at this point I totally understand how you feel.
It's getting frustrating, and its not like CC is doing us a favor by releasing one of our maps. I can speak for myself here - I lose countless hours, days, (time that I'm not using for personal stuff like work and family) working and reworking on a map for virtually no payback than the one of making this site (and its community) more attractive. And that's a payback because I do love CC, but I'm one step away of putting aside all this map-making adventure and ride into the warm sunset without looking back.

DiM, I am glad you will wait it out. I love your map designs. AoR series directly contributed to me buying premium. As a business manager, its tough to watch a contributing member so frustrated and hindered by CC. It is a constant battle because they are working with volunteers. I hope things get better for you DiM, I like seeing your work

I move it back as fast as I did as a kindness. If you change your mind again, likely the map will stay in the Recycling Box for much longer. And I find it almost appalling that you looked up every last bit of activity by OliverFA. We're aware you're fired up about maps and moving them forward, but that's practically stalking. Sure, it's publicly available information, but to compile it all and posting it sends the wrong message. It may support your contentions, but not in the way you want them to.

While I agree with you, I can understand DiM's complaints. There are a few maps waiting for XML checks. I don't see why there can't be two people checking XMLs.

i appreciate the movement but i resent the stalking thing.
simply clicking on his latest posts and seeing the first page took less than 2 minutes. if that's stalking then you probably always look behind your shoulder when you walk on the street and snap at anybody that looks at you for more than 2 seconds.
when i'll post shots of oliver in the shower, then call me a stalker, ok?
