You need to explain this to me. How, specifically, has the system ignored them? On the flip side, what, specifically, has the system done to help them? Do these youths have access to education? Do these youths have access to healthcare? Do these youths have access to food and clothing? What sorts of things don't they have access to that the system could provide them (but that the system does not)?

Again, hope you all are safe.

And.. comic boy, I believe you are correct. Part of what we must do as parents, however is not just to teach our kids is to distinguish between legitimate complaints and effective action to solve real problems and simple grousing about things "not being perfect". Also, the fact that we dislike something, even feel injustly treated is never an excuse for giving up. It is one thing to look back and say "Yes, the umpire did use a much larger strike zone for the other team.. but that is going to happen and you have to play the best you can" [and then behind the scenes maybe lodging a protest, if there is a chance of it being heard] Or "That team really beat us up, we need to work on our batting for the next game" and " Those umpires were just biased, next time we play them, I want you to slam into the other players and I don't CARE if they get HURT" (and note.. I am, sadly NOT talking esoterically).

These kids need to be told "Sure, life is unfair.... but you gotta work hard to do what you can, anyway". However, unless the kids are given tools to know how to work hard to make things better, they will just be frustrated.

That is what is really wrong with the Nightstrike's of the world's arguments. By saying simply "its all your fault", then you are essentially telling everyone "you just are not working and I don't care how much you declare you are, I still think you are lazy bum or an idiot". Except, people KNOW they are working hard. Kids see their parents struggling, know they are not simply "lazy idiots". Some may see that their parents lack education or other skills, and take that as an opportunity to do different. BUT, if all they hear from the top, or all they feel they are hearing from "the top" is "buckle down and WORK and everything will be OK".. and they see that those around them ARE buckling down and working and still not succeeding, then it doesn't take long for them to decide maybe that buckling down bit just doesn't matter. When it comes to things like education, it can be particularly a point of anger. Kids know if the school they are attending is real or a joke. But, they rarely have a true chance to go elsewhere.

They should move to the United States, where most people on government assistance have one or even two color televisions with cable.

The states have enough problems of their own without this lot adding to them - but thanks for the offer :)

Since we can't just wipe 'em all out and start again, I think it's time for the bringing back of harsher punishments all round: Corporal to Capital - no more pussy-footing around, these people need to see and experience real deterrents in force.
I feel sorry for the police in Britain and all they have to put up with. Can't be easy doing your job if you're worried about knocking out someone's contact lens.

And secondly give people a need to work - get them off their lazy, sponging, useless backsides and make them actually earn their own living...(amazing concept!) Only then will they begin to gain a modicom of self respect, self worth and pride in their lives, their job and their community. It's all been too easy for too long!

So is this an racial riot? or a social injustice riot? or some of both?

I'm interested in this because every source I hear is making excuses for the rioters.

You would be wrong , they have consistently said that they have no desire to carry guns.

Well I guess things are just gonna have to be allowed to get way out of hand then!

O:)

Well I guess the British police prefer a few riots every decade to 100,000 gun deaths a year :D

Better to live under constant worry of riots a few times a year and a general shit level of law and order?

I seem to remember there were some riots just 4 months ago, and more skirmishes inbetween. a few riots every decade/a few riots every year

Its neither , how many times did you need to be told
You are either deliberately misinterpreting the source material or simply lying , there may be the odd piece of bias/mischief being presented but overall there is huge concensus that there is NO excuse to justify whats happened.

We are told that youths roaming the streets are doing so because they are angry at unemployment, but a quick look at an apprenticeship website yields 2,228 vacancies in London

I have no idea what's going on up the road from me, but roughly 20 police cars and 6 police vans have just roared past my flat.

Easy as that, eh? There will always be unemployment because the capitalist system requires unemployment to keep wages low -

I'm not justifying these riots, but for you to come in and play the 'lazy bum' card is dishonest considering the current economic/employment climate in practically every country at this very moment.

The latest bits I hear say little of this really has to do with anything "real" -- that is not lack of employment, racial tension, or any of the other causes mentioned. Some people may have started for those reasons, but apparently the biggest bit is just kids.. 10, 12 year old kids up to 20, with a very few older folks more or less taking advantage to steal and such.

I am not there. Would like to hear more of what those there are seeing, but that is what the BBC world news report said, and the nightly NPR all things considered broadcasts each said.

Just so you know, this kind of attitude by other governments recently in other parts of the world ended with NATO launching air strikes on them -

If the English government were to carry out your suggestion, it would be mighty hypocritical of them

Gang, wanna turn this into a positive. Gang, let's stop jibber-jabbering and jawboning about the riots and look at all the POSITIVES coming up. For instance, I just submitted my video into the London 2012 "1 Year to Go!" video contest on YouTube. Let's all get behind all the contestants in the contest so we can show England we're behind 'er 110, cheerio and all that crap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpPSKBR9LD4

They haven't accepted my video yet but hoping they do soon, gang.

Go Team Britain!!!
