Favorite war movie?

Post by neanderpaul14 »

Any thoughts? Was thinking of putting up a poll, but wanted some input first. Some of my favorites have to be: The Longest Day, great cast an all time classic movie, Gettysburg, another great cast, also love this as I've always bee a bit of a Civil War buff. However I think my all time favorite has to be Kelly's Heroes for it's time it contained some of the biggest stars of that era, also it had a great story, and some decent action.

Thoughts?

Also really loved Stalag 17 although it wasn't technically a "war movie".

Gettysburg is good, but not my favorite. 300 is good, The 300 Spartans is more factual, but not quite as riveting. But the Lord of the RIngs Return of the King is probably my favorite. I've always like big battle scenes with hand to hand combat, and LOTR:ROTK has my favorite in it.

I'll start with .... Das Boot

p.s.- I love Kelly's Heroes, but to call it a war movie is a stretch :D

I'm not even going to bother making a list, because there's just so many, but I really love Beau Geste.

Do mini-series count?

If so its Band of Brothers,

If not its Uprising (low budget made for tv movie regarding the Warsaw ghetto uprising in WWII, seriously check it out)

I dunno if The Great Escape counts as a war movie or a prison movie, but it's a good one.

The Patriot and Saving Private Ryan are a bit more modern, but they're not bad.

And for just straight up balls out insanity, Inglourious Basterds is a fun one.

I like Glory, Denzel Washington does a great job in an earlier role.

Well, Saving Private Ryan is kind of an obvious choice (and the first one I thought of), but still a very good one.

I've always had a soft spot for Sahara for being a movie starring Humphrey Bogart set in North Africa during WWII. And not being that other one like that.

My personal favorite though has to be The Bridge on the River Kwai, in large part due to Alec Guinness' phenomenal performance and an unforgettable ending.

EDIT: Gotta agree with Safari on Glory, great film.

My favorite is Patton, but I also greatly enjoy Kelly's Heroes and Saving Private Ryan.

Several come to mind......

The Hill(could be described as a prison drama rather than a war film)
A Bridge Too Far
Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence
The Deer Hunter
Ice-Cold in Alex

I enjoy watching most of the films mentioned above, and is nigh on impossible to pick a favourite.

Honourable mention for Escape To Victory

Band Of Brothers
Best scene when Speirs in the heat of battle is given command of Easy Company. He charges across the field, relieves Dike. He then organizes the company and runs thru the enemy position to hook up with another company and runs back. His character alone was just fascinating.

Battle of Britain
The aviation scenes were just great and a lot more realistic than Pearl Harbor.

Gettysburg
The scene where Armistead is telling Longstreet of his farewell to Hancock, heartbreaking.

Private Ryan
I went to the showing where the only seats left were in the very front rows. Intense opening scene of the landing.

The Lighthorsemen
The ending cavalry charge, classic.

They Were Expendable
Kelly's Heroes

Apocalypse Now, unquestionably at the top of the list.

Tora!, Tora!, Tora!
The Seventh Dawn (used to be on TV fairly often, but ever since VCRs came out nobody has released it on VHS or on CD, so if anybody knows where I can see it nowadays let me know!)
The Warlord, probably Charleton Heston's finest moment
Patton

Yeah, agree with those, too! And Zulu Dawn, of course, which was quite possibly better than Zulu.

I very nearly listed this because Bvt. Colonel Anthony William Durnford is my 8th cousin 4 times removed, and so far is the only member of my family that has been portrayed in film(that i have found).....
