greatist musicians of rock.

Post by strike wolf »

Expanding on aog's thread for the greatest bands this will include individual artists as well as bands. So some obvious ones:

Bob Dylan
Hendrix
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
The Who

Some others I'm forgetting to mention

Define greatest (which I will also ask in AoG's thread) - most talent, most popular, best songwriters, most awards?

More of an overall type. Songwriting and talent over popularity and id rather not have awards count for much. There definitely important of course.

"Musicians", so I'd assume it's general skill when creating/performing songs. We should probably start with the sub-categories strike. I suggest making this a "song writing" thread, but honestly, there are so many great song-writers it's gonna be hard

Neal Peart, Geddy Lee (Rush)
Virgil Donati (Planet X)
Jordan Rudess, Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
Yngwie Malmsteen
Patsy Cline -- Greatest vocalist that ever walked the planet (Don't forget that the voice is an instrument, too)
Brad Delp -- vocalist from Boston

Honorable mention:
Within Temptation -- successfully combine Operatic vocals with metal
Steely Dan -- Jazz/Rock Fusion

I think you may have figured out where my taste in music lies.

Angus Young, yes... the rest of them, not so much
strike wolf wrote:Bob Dylan -- Great songwriter, absolutely, but not a great musician

The Beatles -- see Dylan
The Rolling Stones -- Nope
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
The Who These 3 bands are probably the best that ever walked into a recording studio

Ok, inb4 rage, but I honestly think Hendrix is a really poor musician. He's a terrible guitarist. His solos sound like a cat is having a seizure on a plugged in guitar. It's just awful. I hate how people think he's amazing. Honestly, I dislike his music.

You know Bon Scott? The original lead singer? Well, here a couple clips from AC/DC, The Valentines, and Fraternity. Kind of an odd career, but a fruitful one (at least at the end of it) at least.

The Valentines- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ-45XG7n4k (back-up lead singer)
Fraternity- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZY2nl2C ... re=related (looks like Chewbacca, but go ahead and try to deny those vocals!)
AC/DC- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hruhe6n7Stk (listen to Bon Jazz it up!)

And Bon was just the more prominent of the group with being in other bands before the formation of AC/DC as we know it. I do agree on Angus, but the others also deserve recognition.

Your point is taken, sir... I stand corrected (and humbled... the man's got chops =D> )

Songwriter - Kenny Rogers (and I HATE country music). As a vocalist...not so much. <grin>

Rage.

I hereby declare you an idiot, sir. In all seriousness, though, have you listened to stuff other than his current radio songs? He was a master bluesman. And I have no idea what you're talking about when you say he's a terrible guitarist. Some of his more "Acid Rock" stuff is kinda astral and experimental, but there's no way in hell you can say he's terrible.

Little Wing, prolly my favorite Jimi song.<-----and not much of a solo you pussy :)

Red House----Just listen to it!

Jimi's version of Albert King's Born Under a Bad Sign.

I posted this once already in another thread but it deserves another go---Once I Had a Woman.

I didn't hear a cat having a seizure in any of those, AoG.

P.S. I will gladly post more to disprove you. :P

My positioin on great rock is that if musicians are pro rock, why be against it.

I was trying to make a drug refrrence there, but I succeeded to fail.

These topics are inciting me to acts of off topic terrorism.

you say individuals, but you list bands!
are you saying that every member of each of the bands listed is a great musician?
I'm confused!

some people might say that Ringo Starr was the best drummer in the world, but I'd say he wasn't even the best drummer in The Beatles!
