Preventing STUPID mistakes

Post by Fattyschippy »

Game 7965495

I'm gutted...completely gutted.
The thing is, I've just thrown away a near certain victory in this game, where I planned to take out blue for 5 territory cards on 50 troops. But then, clever old me decides to make an invasion path where it's impossible for me to conquer all their territories.

How do I go about trying to prevent sort of idiotic blunder in the future??

Thanks...any help will be much appreciated :P

play slower, think a little more clearly. If you try to move too fast you will make mistakes. Always look for opportunities and always take the best option.

I don't know that there's any way to completely prevent them, but when i'm planning a sweep i always figure out my attack path, then walk away for a bit and come back to it. That way I end up double-checking to make sure I haven't made a dumb mistake.

But I mean, what would you do in freestyle, when your plan being successful relies on the opponent not starting his turn - would you still take time in double checking and 'proofreading' ??

don't play freestyle than

I am horrible at chess but still love to play.I need time to think or i will make dumb mistakes.well
more likely to make dumb mistakes so I never play time games.well Ever so often I do though
but i mainly try to stick to untimed game

basically I play the game that I feel comfortable in.I know my limits and I try to stay in my limit
if you think you need more time to think than play mostly normal sequential games.Just a suggestion,

I find you can still do it, just much more quickly (and without walking away from the PC). You should probably focus on sequential casual games until you feel confident that you'll get it right 99.9% of the time.

That being said, everyone will occasionally mess up. Sometimes you will throw away a game you are winning, and sometimes your opponent will give you a way back into a game that you've written off as lost

in casual yes, the likleyhood that the 1-2 min will mean the difference is not great make sure you have the best attack plan for all possible outcomes weather it be other people coming etc and then make your move.

Don't play too early in the morning before the caffeine kicks in or too late at night after the recreationals of choice have...seriously (as possible...someone who makes 'em ALL the time)...

Aye, all of the above combined with practicing to perfection will, in due time, make you a better player. Just keep your wits about you and try to consider as many possibilities as you can while not being unreasonable with yourself and giving yourself a mini stroke trying to calculate odds...and you'll be fine.

Make notes on attack path in notepad or on a real notepad. Like others say don't play freestyle if it forces you to make mistakes.

Stupid mistakes here don't bother me so much. Stupid mistakes while I'm playing poker, on the other hand....

just double check everything before you press the button. My worst mistakes usually involve pressing the end attacks or end fortification button when I mean to press the attack/fortification button :P

Yes, The late after recreationals gets me all too often! :( I'm good in the morning though. ;) Oh when you have all the time to think about your attack path, take it. Walk away and come back to it this greatly reduces your chance of error. Also, get BOB! I love BOB!

I moved recently and I don't have the internet speed or reliability to play speed fs games. :( I'm too slow for that.

Just wanted to make a confession here: I played in a game with 5 people and thought I was doing pretty darn good being in the final 3. However, I was attacked by one color, and in a rage for revenge, attacked him mercilessly, almost wiping him out. The 3rd opponent then finished him off, and clobbered me, winning the game.. I should have attacked the 2nd and 3rd guys equally, it was a no brainer. My "Shylock error" cost me the chance of winning... (i wanted my pound of flesh!) Lesson: don't attack for emotional reasons. Don't spend all your armies on one opponent, leaving another unscathed, ready to pounce like a vulture on your depleted forces... It's not personal, it's just War!
