For the CLA members that have access, a full spectrum of questions and concerns has been posted here around penalties and defaults beyond just this issue:

I'm told I have to be unbiased, also, a recent pm tells me I set bad examples for the CC community, so I'm probation.

Perhaps we should also discuss whether or not clans are willing to graciously abide by penalties they agree to be subject to when signing up for events?

Maybe consider graciously antagonizing with scripts. Wait TheBro that doesn't make sense.

That is welcome too.

Although AOD is not in the CCup, had we been I would not let a player get past 18 in great fear, but that is just how I would manage.

Perhaps we should grant the power to amend fucked rules. That way we don't need to "graciously abide by penalties we 'agree' to" and both sides can let the assholes loose and make this world a better place.

I have to say this has (for the most part) been an interesting debate/argument. One of the mistakes I have made in my life is looking at what isn't happening vs what people can do and achieve, I'll leave you all with this quote for now.

“It is easier to perceive error than to find truth, for the former lies on the surface and is easily seen, while the latter lies in the depth, where few are willing to search for it.”

i will be playing the xylophone and mumbling existential witticisms into a mouldy carrot for the next hour, if anyone is desperately seeking solace in north scotland.

I'm sorry for being a prick. There, I'm gracious. Now where was I.

No but forreallsauce, I'll give credit where credit is due. You did come out and say it was in bad taste, and that was bold considering it appears others did not feel the same in your clan. Still, graciously accepting our fate? Throw me an udder that's retarded and naive. The punishment does not fit the crime. I don't think it does, YOU probably don't think it does, and Chuck sure as hell doesn't. So why did it take such "honorable and intelligent men and Foxes" such a long time to decide our penalty? And then pick the least honorable option?! And then question about us complaining!?

One of the things I've been finding instructive about this whole affair is how preposterously badly Cort blew the messaging. You've made the strongest argument for at least trying to see things from the other side, and you're a neutral party, which again tells you how bad their PR disaster has been. Tony Hayward is reading this thread and thinking, "well, at least I didn't f*ck up this badly."

Obviously there were a number of problems during/with this matchup.

Games not being sent out, not updating the first page, lack of communication, bad jokes (ie the josko thing).....this thing has been drawn out enough and both sides are to blame.

While I personally would prefer that this rule had been implemented different initially, the rule is the rule, and the bait and switch from "We will understand either way" to "You cowardly pussies" is a little hypocritical.

Ummm... are you retarded?

Chariot of Fire wrote:There must be, however, a certain number who evidently feel TOFU should be punished to the full letter of the law, or at least beyond what may be construed a fair and just compromise. Well I'm sorry, but for anyone who could entertain such an idea I have nothing but contempt. If any member of TOFU even raised such a notion then I wouldn't want him in the clan (but then I know none of them would - it's just who we are).

Yeah, you're retarded.

I know you are still crying in your sleep at night due to your loss here trap, and feel the need to lash out sans thinking to fix the fact that mommy didn't love you, but this is probably my fault for not holding your hand on your fucking mouse while navigating the thread...

Chariot of Fire wrote:The fault lies entirely with me, having confused one game that I did play (USApocalypse) with a game of similar historical note (Arms Race) which I know I didn't play, and thus I exceeded my quota. Whilst it is a pity the OP was never updated (I knew we should have done the darn thing), I can only take full responsibility as the mistake lay with me and my own miscalculation.

Whilst the rule is somewhat Draconian to have to forfeit all games (the CL adopts an 'any in excess are forfeit' policy) it is nevertheless in black and white and it is KORT's prerogative to apply that ruling.

I can ask members of KORT to search their conscience or, simply, I call it a day...cap in hand...and thank one and all for what has been a most entertaining, eventful and challenging series of games. My apologies of course to all those members of TOFU who have played so well yet seemingly all in vain.

It was quite a fireworks display for what has, ultimately, been a washed-out event.

Sorry folks.

Chariot of Fire wrote:I'm compelled to express my gratitude to a whole host of people for their overwhelming support - not only every member of TOFU (which is heartwarming to say the least because I'm an absolute ogre if any of them make a mistake, for which I'm openly critical) but also third parties and even members of KORT via PM - really gratefully received, thank you.

A couple of things just to set the record straight:

- it is ironic how it was me, back in the formative days of this tourney, who requested clarification of the rule on exceeding player quota. I honestly have to say I wasn't aware of what the penalty that was decided was though - this can be the problem with edited posts, as an edit isn't highlighted - and I probably would have commented that 'total forfeiture of all games' seemed rather excessive. Others would seem to agree. That said, regardless of what the rule is it wouldn't have changed the oversight I made. It was simply an honest mistake, not trying to gain any advantage.

- before anyone puts any more words in the mouths of KORT it should be noted that no one in their clan has stated his or her intent to uphold the rule (which is within their right), thus any aspersions that they are doing so are ill-founded and premature. It must be sorely tempting to put me in my place, especially given some of the slings and arrows that have been cast over the course of this challenge, yet ultimately this is a gaming web site whose principles are of fair play in a competitive environment.

I for one know that the sense of community can be strengthened, repaired even, and that a moral victory can be won simply on the basis of a decision, whilst I sit in my corner eating some humble pie.

Anyhow the only way redemption is going to come is if Kort wins the set.

I guess what I find the most interesting about reading all the responses is that there were many individuals who believed that a 2 game penalty or even a 3 game penalty would have been a fair enough punishment. And that even those 2-3 games would probably have been enough to win the Challenge outright. So is 2-3 game loss any different from a 21 game loss based on rules. If the final tally was 32-28 in favor of KORT.. wouldn't the same debate occur on whether or not the better team lost due to a mishap? or the application of a forfeiture of games?

So in reality, the only choice the public had given KORT was to apply no penalty at all. They were to finish out the war w/o exercising any penalty and hopefully advancing based on the merits of those games.

Hence, KORT is the villain because they exercised any and all rights to the said games. For those of you in THOTA who feel that this is a dishonorable way to win. A cowards way out, etc, etc.. Then why don't you have a vote amongst yourselves...and if the winner of the actual games at hand is TOFU at the end of the day.. Then feel free to face them in a WAR.. so that you can give the "proper winners" a shot to claim victory of the CC cup title.

Obviously if KORT wins the games outright.. then the discussion is null and void.

Congrats to THOTA, Congrats to KORT, and my condolences to TOFU.

and to CHUUCk, Hell of a job..

As for the rest of us playing media, TV broadcasters, and analyst... LETS STOP BLOWING SHIT OUTTA PROPORTION and making it appear as if this was Armageddon.

Cheers
Culs

I don't think that's necessarily the case. A lot of people would have been fine with the 1-game forfeit. At the very least, it wouldn't have elicited the near-unanimous disgust and opposition that their eventual decision did.

Is there really any wiggle room here? Regardless of the rightness of Cort's claim, they did, indeed, take "the coward's way out" by choosing not to play the challenge out in some capacity. And to add insult to injury, they tried to damage-control with the "oh, well, we were going to let you guys off the hook, but you were so meeeeeeeean in the thread that we must punish you!" concept, which, again, makes Tony Hayward look like Don Draper. It's been like watching a Three Stooges short in slow motion, and every time a cow tries to pour water on the fire, they fail to note that the can they're using is labeled "GASOLINE". It's sad, really, I would've expected a lot more from such talented and smart players.
