We really never considered East Germany to be a real country... just a part of Germany that was being illegally occupied and controlled by the USSR.

The DDR received diplomatic recognition by the USA in 1974 (and, in turn, recognized the existence of the USA that year).

Jim, I really feel sorry for you. Honestly, I really do. Wikipedia and the American educational system has really let you down as has been patently obvious in this thread as you stumble through a history of the 20th century, backtracking and reformatting your points to accommodate the new historic gems and anecdotes you keep learning along the way, periodically becoming flustered and just throwing up your hands in the air, screaming "Go f*ck Yourself!" and then cutting-and-pasting 23 pages out of wikipedia.

# 1 - I never said that the US did not offer diplomatic recognition to the DDR. I said that we never really considered them a country. These are not mutually exclusive. You can know that the DDR isn't a "country" (by the standard definition of the word)... and still realize that the expediant course of action is to offer diplomatic recognition.

I think it's a great idea that is completely impractical and won't ever work because it goes against human nature. I think that every time it has been tried in the real world it has failed because it fails to take selfish behavior into account.

People are selfish. Some more some less. Communism only works if NO ONE is selfish.

Let's pretend we argee it would work fine if only 10% of people were selfish. That would still guarantee failure as you will never get 90% of the people in this world to act in a selfless manner.
