Anyway, enough about our lot, what a finish to the match! The bravery and composure shown by Gyan to take the opening penalty in the shoot-out immediately after his last second miss, was just stunning, and I've nothing against Ghana, but I've been rooting for Uruguay since their opening game.

Suarez has been one of the stars of the tournament, not his best game today though and it is a shame he had to do such a despicable thing on the goal line. At the end of the day though, the penalty was missed and as were two more by Ghana, it would have been great to see an African team make the semi-final in the first World Cup hosted in Africa but never mind, the team is young and they'll come back in 2014 as one of the favourites.


Think Holland, Uruguay is going to make an exciting semi-final - going to have to root for the Dutch in that one!

I think soccer may be the only sport where you can break a rule to stop a score and not have the score stand. Another very unfortunate policy. He should have made the PK, but he never should have been forced into that situation.

Absolutely devastated for Ghana. Honestly don't know a single person who wasn't supporting them and they were so so close. Had enough chances even without the penalty but totally proud of the performance. Glad that the Netherlands won, one of the few upsets I've predicted, and hoping for a Germany and Spain victory tomorrow.

Germany/Argentina should hopefully be very exitiing. One team plays a open fast game and the other team has an awful defence but incredible attack. I reckon it might be about 3-2 one way or the other, hopefully.

Heh totally agree, a rule like "a goal will be awarded if the ball was stopped by a field player's hand" would totally make sense. Then again FIFA has proven they are less likely to evolve than a fucking coelacanth. Anyway the quarters so far have been rich and upper level, hope it will keep going tomorrow (sure of it for the first one, a bit worried about blockhaus Paraguay and neurasthenic Spain).

Before Mr Blatter confuses his old brain even more with these kinds of improvements to the game, he first needs to establish that when the ball crosses the goal-line, it should stand as a goal. Therefore, his first baby-step forward should be the introduction of goal-line technology. He is, as you said, stuck in his old ways - the rigid old man.

Everyone's talk of South American domination and European failures seemed to be a tad too early. Paraguay are definitely out of the world cup, needing a ridiculous amount of luck to proceed, and uruguay should not have made it into the semis, riding their luck for their second time. Argentina might make it two, but that game is unpredictable.

Realistically there will be only one or two South American teams, and two or three European teams.And of the the South American team which might find itself the only country from its continent in the semis went through under the most dubious of circumstances.

I was rooting for Uruguay. To me they are playing very well, Fucile, Lugambio, Forlan, Suarez have been playing very well, and the whole team fights for every single ball. It's amazing that they played an African team and didn't lose in the physique part of the game.

Great game tho, anyone could've won. And nobody has mentioned the way "el loco" Abreu kicked the last penalty. Lol, if they had only researched him, he always kicks penalties like that, I knew he would do that, I was excited when I saw he was gonna be the fifth.

I don't know why there's so much hate against Uruguay, to me they have had a great World Cup.

I believe he said he wanted this "technology" for all the leagues, "from the minors to the majors", so that it would be the same kinda of rules and play on all levels, but the problem is these "minors" cannot afford it so he doesn't want it unless "all" can afford it. AND that is why it is never going to happen until someone new steps up.

Fuck yeah! Uruguay doesn't stand a chance.

It was rather telling that Dunga had to have one man on the field, at all times, whose only task was to foul Robben. Bastos was very lucky to avoid the second yellow, and Melo certainly earned his red.

Brazil definitely out-played them for most of the first half, and capitalized perfectly on some sloppy defending, but from the start of the second half on, it was obvious they weren't keeping up anymore.

Uruguay and Ghana put on an exciting show (well, by the end, they did). As for the hand-ball save right at the whistle, it's a shame in that case, but in general a red card, and a penalty is more of a punishment than just a goal would be.

Hoping for a goal fest this afternoon. 5-4 would be a good final score.

My predictions for the final results.

2nd- Spain
3rd- Germany

My two teams at the beginning of the cup, besides Mexico of course, were Netherlands and Spain, but I like a lot the way Germany and Uruguay have been played.

Germany vs Uruguay is my final. Timminz only supports Netherlands because his hair is orange.

Awesome Game I'm for Germany at this point through and through. I love the way they play, so fearless and aggressive (kinda like Germany) Also the Uruguay Ghana game was pretty damn epic. So tense. I'm glad Uruguay won. A.) because Ghana kicked us out, B.) I just didn't like the way they played, too much drama.

I really hope it comes down to Netherlands vs. Germany! That would be a hell of a match up!
