That is a very astute point.

I was just passing on the story. I blamed it on the oil spill. The federal gov't has been very slow and put in a very poor performance and made a lot of bad decisions. They could have made good decisions.

I only said that if we would have done better, the oil spill would be better, and peoples lives would be better, and at least 1 person might still be alive.

Depends on what kind of price tag was put on the 'help'.

Perhaps to a degree...but given the nature and scope of the problem, I'm not sure even that is relevant.

Well, it's easy enough to say that now with perfect hindsight. But on day three of this crisis, with several possible remedies yet to be implemented, was its final scope really apparent?

I, along with both the White House and the overall financial market's initial response to this crisis, would argue no.

In truth, you are only correct because so many people are utterly ignorant of the true impact of such a disaster, including the regulators (government), BP and other oil companies, etc. People did not know this even could be such a disaster because they were not required, actually are STILL not required to do a full analysis. Had they been required, then its likely they would have also had to put in a good deal more preventative measures, etc. Now, after the fact, folks will scramble to assess cost, but it will be woefully short because the people making those analysis might know a lot about economics, but know far too little about natural systems to truly understand what has happened.

And for proof, I put forward A. that this happened at all
B. all previous disasters that pretty much result in tiny improvements, but no real and true fixes, so while the absolute exact disaster might not happen again, the same basic type does happen over and over and over (human arrogance ignoring danger to other people and ecosystems in the name of making money)

It's human nature to exploit things.
