Risk Strategy for a Beginner?

Hi everyone. I started playing here a few days ago and I'm already thoroughly addicted. Since I'm relatively new to the game, I was just wondering if you guys knew of any good sources I could read for strategy to help out my game. I'm mostly interested in standard, escalating, chained fort games, those being the official rules according to the instructions that came with the board game (which your site inspired me to get).

(@ MrMcMoo: again, i'm sorry about my tag. i had no idea there were other moos at CC before i joined. i hope we can work out our differences)

Huh. I coulda swore that the official rules are for adjacent forts, not chained. *shrug*

That may be in some versions. From what I've read, the official rules have changed over time, and they also depend on where you bought the game. The version I have was released in the US in 2003.

The original one that came out however long ago with the roman numerals called for adjacent, but the newer one that looks spiffy and cool calls for chained. I know, I have both.

Thanks for the help so far, especially those links you guys provided. I read through both of them. Not to be too picky, but I'm still looking for a bit more, honestly. In the first week here, I picked up on the 'stay grouped and keep large forces at your choke points' stuff. What I'm looking for is more advanced, I guess.

Ideally, I'd like to find something that is aimed at people who already understand the basics and could benefit from elaboration. I'd love something that set up specific situations and explained what the best moves would be in particular cases and why. It's possible that I'm asking for something that doesn't exist, but if you've seen anything like this I'd really appreciate it if you could direct me there.

On escalating games: The other night I watched a standard, escalating cards game being played by a couple of experienced players. The first thing I noticed is that they weren't too concerned with holding continents anymore (the card bonus was up to ~40, so I understand why). What is the main strategy at the end of an escalating cards game?

in escalating, continent bonuses are crap compared to card exchange bonuses.
in one game bonus for cards was up to 600

the main strategy in the final rounds is to wait for others to bash their armies. it comes to a point where all players have hunndreds or even thousands of troops. in this case the first to attack usually ends up dead along with the one he attacked. the winner being the one that sits nd watches

tbh as far as im aware once u know the basics like you seem to then it is trial and error to see what works. The one i do like though is try to look like you are staying small when really you are large.

The best way is just to play many games and eventually when you get fed up of being beaten by better players with the tactics you use.
You will find yourself playing better tactics in time.
Also when choosing a game to join go for high ranking players who will test you more.
