Gold Rush (V4)

Post by skello496 »

OK, well I searched the forum and didn't find a Gold Rush map.
so...
Map looks rather cluttered now that I added the caves.
V4
Image

2 way attack into buildings from holes in the building's walls.
The circles on the trail have 3 neutrals each and reset to 3 neutrals each turn.
Gold mines all start with 5 Neutrals each interior room has 1 neutral.
Gold mines give 2 troop bonus each.
Bank (biggest building) has 5 neutrals and gives a 2 troop bonus.
Sheriff, Jail, and courthouse gives 2 troops
Players start in the streets and buildings.
5 troop bonus for holding all of the streets or buildings.
One way attack from town to mines.
Wagon Depot and barn gives direct attack to Gold Panning
Each Gold Panning gives 1 troop
Entrance to mine gives ability to attack interior rooms.
Mortician and Boot Hill gives -1 troops (for obvious reasons)
Hotel and Saloon give 2 troops
Barber and Bath give 2 troops

Graphics need a lot of work, especially around the mountains and rivers, I will try to get that done in another draft. I need to somehow make the river look like water. Mountains I don't know about.

Main Questions

1. Should I draw little mountains or should I try to draw ridges of some kind.
2. Do I need more buildings?
3. Do I need a robber camp?
4. Too small or too big?
5. Any suggestions?

I think I may change this to give mines bigger bonuses, but I will see what you think first.
Using Paint.NET and updating this to V3.

Please give me input on what you think!

I'm not feelin' it... Well, the idea has potential, but it is going to need lots of development.

Perhaps more territories? You have tons of empty space here. Think about the possibilities... there's so much more you could do with the theme, gameplay-wise.

For example... Make the buildings unique. What buildings do the cliché western towns usually have? Of course bank, but what else? saloon, barber shop, mortician, sheriff's office, jail, shops, post office... All these could be incorporated with the gameplay. Then you could fill the gaps with some residential buildings.

For the trails, you could play with the geography more. Put in paths, mountains, rivers maybe... Territories with bandits could have decay, and then you could catch the bandits and bring them to the sheriff for a bonus...

Well, my point is, there's tons of stuff that could be done with the theme... I hope this gives you something to think for your next version.

Oh and paint.net can be downloaded for free at http://www.getpaint.net/download.html

Yes I totally agree. I actually thought of doing a lot of stuff like that but decided that before I did so much work on it I had better see if people even liked the idea. I think i will give it a Sheriff's office and jail and if you have both it will give a bonus.

I dont know about catching the bandits, but I will work on improving the trails and scenery.

Hmm... I think I will check out that download. Thanks for the input.

I started making a draft of an island-based gold rush a long time ago. It seems fairly similar to your suggestion, so I'll just leave it here for you to enjoy and be inspired by.

I look forward to seeing where you go with this map. Try to focus on the gameplay aspects before getting too concerned about the graphics.

I like that one ManBungalow, its kinda the opposite type o f play than mine, because yours the players move inwards mine they move out. Anyways, I got Paint.net and shall begin work on a better version tomorrow probably.

I like your idea of moving from the center out. Many maps do the opposite (cough, including my Zombie map).

Gold Rush could be quite fun... you could also include 'underground' territories for mines, or rivers where the lazy dudes pan for gold.

I like the idea of bandits waiting around to steal the loot, too, as well as a sheriff.

In the towns, you could have something that would allow the 1-way attack to the mines and skip all the hazards along the trail (like a caravan/wagon train, etc.).

I vote yes.

Thanks, I think I will take the Wagon Train and the River and combine them, making a river that you can get to normally or by using the caravan (which resets to neutrals each turn) I also really like the ideas for underground portions, that could turn out quite interesting.

Is there a real Gold Rush you can base this off of? California or the Klondike (Dawson City) perhaps? It looks like you are going for a wild west/California feel, you must know something about the forty-niners then.

I've been tossing around the idea of British Columbia's Gold Rush, though my prototypes aren't yet functioning. A trip to Barkerville was inspirational.

It can be a bit of a job finding good maps and information to work from, but I think the product would be more valuable in the end. And for now, it may help generate interest and input to have a map we can relate to historically.

It is loosely based on the California Gold Rush but not specifically related to it. Old west feel was supposed to be there. I suppose I could grab a map of the California Gold Rush off the internet and modify it to have the capability for a map, but then there would not be a town and it would become just another of those maps where its lots of territories no real objective. With what I have here the objective is really to grab the gold mines to get an advantage over your opponent.

I like the Idea. The concept is new and fun.

You could throw this into a famous gold rush camp... with nearby caves and claim jumpers and the local sherrif, and really add to territories and themes.

Graphics need work, but you know that... SO all I can say is good idea and gl and hv

Thanks a lot, yes I know the graphics need lotsa work, but hey, first map I expected that. :D Thanks for the encouragement. I think I may add some caves that give a small bonus because they are a "hideout"

Ok, well, I'm working on the next version and I have one question, do you think it needs bigger bonuses? I thought that for such a small map be better with lower bonuses but when adding all the caves and underground passageways it gets a lot bigger.

while I can sort of deduce which territories are which outside of the town, labels would really help analyze the bonuses.

Also, are you using the BigImg tags or just the Img tags when posting the map? Use the BigImg if you aren't already.

I don't think the map looks cluttered, I'm liking how this is shaping up ;)

Sorry, been out of touch for the week. Yes, label the mines, caves, etc. so that it's clear what bonus type they are and what a player would get for holding them.
