Stephen Hawking: Aliens exist but don't talk to them

Post by GabonX »

All of this seems like common sense to me. I would have considered it under Hawking's level..

.. My guess is that he feels the need to accentuate these points for the misguided and the skeptics.

THE aliens are out there and Earth had better watch out, at least according to Stephen Hawking. He has suggested that extraterrestrials are almost certain to exist — but that instead of seeking them out, humanity should be doing all it that can to avoid any contact.

The suggestions come in a new documentary series in which Hawking, one of the world’s leading scientists, will set out his latest thinking on some of the universe’s greatest mysteries.

Alien life, he will suggest, is almost certain to exist in many other parts of the universe: not just in planets, but perhaps in the centre of stars or even floating in interplanetary space.

Hawking’s logic on aliens is, for him, unusually simple. The universe, he points out, has 100 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of millions of stars. In such a big place, Earth is unlikely to be the only planet where life has evolved.

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,” he said. “The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”

The answer, he suggests, is that most of it will be the equivalent of microbes or simple animals — the sort of life that has dominated Earth for most of its history.

One scene in his documentary for the Discovery Channel shows herds of two-legged herbivores browsing on an alien cliff-face where they are picked off by flying, yellow lizard-like predators. Another shows glowing fluorescent aquatic animals forming vast shoals in the oceans thought to underlie the thick ice coating Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter.

Such scenes are speculative, but Hawking uses them to lead on to a serious point: that a few life forms could be intelligent and pose a threat. Hawking believes that contact with such a species could be devastating for humanity.

He suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on: “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.”

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is “a little too risky”. He said: “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.”

The completion of the documentary marks a triumph for Hawking, now 68, who is paralysed by motor neurone disease and has very limited powers of communication. The project took him and his producers three years, during which he insisted on rewriting large chunks of the script and checking the filming.

John Smithson, executive producer for Discovery, said: “He wanted to make a programme that was entertaining for a general audience as well as scientific and that’s a tough job, given the complexity of the ideas involved.”

Hawking has suggested the possibility of alien life before but his views have been clarified by a series of scientific breakthroughs, such as the discovery, since 1995, of more than 450 planets orbiting distant stars, showing that planets are a common phenomenon.

So far, all the new planets found have been far larger than Earth, but only because the telescopes used to detect them are not sensitive enough to detect Earth-sized bodies at such distances.

Another breakthrough is the discovery that life on Earth has proven able to colonise its most extreme environments. If life can survive and evolve there, scientists reason, then perhaps nowhere is out of bounds.

Hawking’s belief in aliens places him in good scientific company. In his recent Wonders of the Solar System BBC series, Professor Brian Cox backed the idea, too, suggesting Mars, Europa and Titan, a moon of Saturn, as likely places to look.

Similarly, Lord Rees, the astronomer royal, warned in a lecture earlier this year that aliens might prove to be beyond human understanding.

“I suspect there could be life and intelligence out there in forms we can’t conceive,” he said. “Just as a chimpanzee can’t understand quantum theory, it could be there are aspects of reality that are beyond the capacity of our brains.”

I dunno, when it comes to aliens I'll stick with Stephen Hawking over bronze age mysticism.

I don't see how we'd know it's anything other than a 50/50 guess whether they're good or evil.

I mean, yea, they could destroy us.

Or they could have the secret to immortality.

Well that certainly is an interesting interpretation...

I think it's a fairly wise message.

Think about it.

If you were a representative of a space faring technologically advanced alien race, what would your first impression be?
We look like... well...................what we do.
A morally bankrupt resource raping pack of selfish parasites who starve babies for profit and have no regard for our species future when placed side by side with a pile of gold. ( a remarkably useless metal.....)

If they ever come here, they're gonna gas us out like rats in a 5 star hotel.

My guess would be that any species advanced enough to figure out space travel would probably consider us primitive and would treat us the way we treat lab rats. Or possibly as slave labor. Or maybe they would exterminate us and take our natural resources. Or all of our white women!! Oh sweet Jesus, protect the white women!!

It was Hawking himself who said that there would be no need for war between two space-faring species. One would be so advanced over the other that there wouldn't need to be a fight. If there were a fight one of them would stand virtually no chance.

I think trying to predict what an alien race would think of us or do about us is impossible and almost silly. They're aliens. We know nothing about them. We don't even know if they possess qualities like selfishness and compassion, or if they do, how they perceive them. Trying to figure out what the logical thing to do doesn't help much either - we humans don't ever seem to do the logical thing as a whole, after all.

I watched Inside the Universe with Stephen Hawking: part one, Aliens like it seems at least one of you did too. He mentioned a person getting a radio signal from outer space in 1977...the "WoW!" signal or something. They tried to point all of their dishes in the same directions to hear it again, and might have even tried sending their own out.

To me this seems to be just like those stories of the highway truck drivers seeing this or that (some story of someone being alone and seeing evidence of aliens) but if this was true - meaning that they came from aliens specifically the Hawking makes an obvious but good point that should be mentioned here.

The signal came from a source that was 200 lightyears away, which means that it took 200 years to get to us. Obviously the aliens didn't respond again when we responded back, if we did. It would take 200 years for our signal to get to them and another 200 years to confirm that. There is such a gap here that people or the aliens would probably forget that they even sent the signal.

My take on aliens is that if they do exist we should talk to them, but only after actually being within a fraction of a lightyear. The reason why is, just like scientists find new life sources on our own planet and learn a lot, we should do the same.

There is no need to fear aliens, because 1. if they exist close to us they are probably primitive forms ... living under the ice of Jupiter's moon, or even under the surface of mars or 2. if they are able to have the technology to get to us from long distances such as 200 lightyears away then they probably would have the technology to kill A. kill us very fast (we probably wouldn't even feel the pain) or B. if they were "Peaceful" then they would make us move to get there resources. After all there is no need for them to come such a long journey to study us...I think they would be more interested in our resources.

To finish, Humans themselves seem like a bad resource for food (our bodies don't seem very nutritional) and our energy (from the brain most likely) seems useless too...I heard that dolphins have better communicating skills than humans and Aliens might go for them before us, but one only has to look at our politics today to make the point.

Lastly, some of what is said here and what other people wrote about Aliens is close to what Stephen Hawking said but I don't think he ever said we should or shouldn't talk to the aliens.

This isn't new is it? Hawking has had this opinion for a long time I thought.

Odd. A show called "Heroman" started just a couple weeks ago with the plotline where a scientist made first contact with aliens, then they come to destroy humanity.

Yeah that was kinda the point of what I posted earlier. I think he's just making it more mainstream to be able to say "aliens are real." Entertaining too. And I'm sure Hawking has reached a point where he has concerns about his legacy.

However, and I know this is going to sound crazy. I know that it does before I even say it, and I'm saying it as a "lol" sort of thing.

Alex Jones did a radio show around a year ago where he "interviewed" a soldier who couldn't give away their identity. They both concluded together, that the pentagon was going to work to make aliens seem more plausible to the general public. After that, the "new 911" was going to be a faked alien attack from far away. Using the United States 800-900 bases overseas and given our position in global politics... the US was going to take it's place as the head of the new world government... and unite everyone under the common fear of alien attack. Jones said that we should expect more special programs on the subject of making aliens more plausible. Alex Jones has gone on to say "false alien attack" a few times on his show.
So that's actually what Hawking is doing here. He's a puppet of the NWO.

Sometimes from the most brilliant minds comes STUPID. “We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet. I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach.”

Any species so advanced as to be able to travel across light years would find no resources whatsoever on the Earth worth taking. None. We are not even the right star system to look for the good resources. Heavy metals are better found around the remnants of supernovae. Hydrocarbons can be found on any large sized gas giant. We would have nothing, whatsoever.

More over, even assuming faster than light technology, by the time our signal reaches them in the first place, we will not only be long gone, but our great grand children would be able to kick galactic ass! Don’t dismiss Admiral Kirk!
