You REALLY fail and selective quoting. I mean, you cut out the part that was most relevant to the point you were trying to make.

I believe this is one of the area's that should be cut. I mean seriously, does the government need to spend money on the study of black holes?

Who said the astrophysics position had to be with the government? Try to use some flexibility in your thought-processes, if that's possible.

So him being a "kid" means he apparently didn't say that? His AGE has nothing to do with it. You not being able to read does.

The post above this one is WRONG because Hector's was WRONG. I'm not going to take the time to correct something that shouldn't have been so difficult to "get right" the first time.

Again, you can't think critically nor logically. What it means is that a kid is generally going to have a very limited world-view, due to a lack of experience. You, not being a kid, should not have such a very limited world-view (though by looking at your posts over the years, I really should know better than that, I suppose).

jay_a2j wrote:His AGE has nothing to do with it. You not being able to read does.

His age certainly can have a lot to do with a lack of experience.

Balance. Life is all about balance. I think there's so much to experience in life that it is best to distribute your energy into many activities. Don't stress about it. In 100 years you'll be dead. And will you have died with any regrets? Of course. Just try to reduce the number of big regrets. If not pursuing astrophysics is going to be a big regret, then you have to go for it. But if you are really undecided, then make a logical decision based on weighing out what is important to you. Then carry on and see what happens. But never forget to party. You must always party.

Eh, yea. The only thing that I'm freaking out about is that, I don't want a job that I'm not going to be happy with. I don't want to spend my life in a shitty job being miserable, but I'm also afraid that if I'm having trouble landing a good job, then I'd be bringing my future family down with me, which they probably won't deserve.

And I don't even drink. =S

If you're wanting to study black holes, I am thinking something along the lines of the tax money trail in Washington D.C. might be right up your alley.

Astrophysics sounds quite interesting. I've always been fascinated by stuff that is like science fiction, but in reality. Although I have a physics minor, I definitely prefer chemistry.

The remarkably short answer is- if you're doing a PhD make sure it's on a topic you're actually interested in. It'll last somewhere between 3 and 5 years, and it will be mostly your own research, and it will take up huge amounts of your time. If you're interested in the topic, go for it. If you have doubts, take a year out and travel somewhere. If you're not interested, you won't be interested in two years time either.

OK kids, stop the sandbox fight. Christ, if this is a flame war then you guys are using Bic lighters.

AOG, people say "do what you love" but if you're like me, you have no idea if what you love as a hobby will translate to loving it as a job. Get all your general electives out of the way to give yourself more time to decide. Also keep in mind that you can get a degree in biophysics, and go to grad school for astrophysics. It's possible. But maybe try to find a job somewhat relating to astrophysics, and if you're hooked you're hooked, if you're not then you've got a biophysics degree, hooray.

Also a CS minor could never hurt. I'm in the field because I love computers (even though they can't love me back, cold hunks of silicon that they are), but the job opportunities will always be there.

Poster Numero Uno....Mate.

If you want good advice, don't ever listen to a teacher.
Those that Can Do, Do ! Those that can't Do, eventually end up trying to teach.

As far as Astrophysics, Applied Math, MetaPhysics & albeit Philosophy in a way goes, all I know is your chosen field beats the hell out of the Cosmology hands down......there is Speculation, Pure Speculation, then there is Cosmology......Go with your dream. Do what you need to do to make it happen.
Even if you don't make it, I'll look forward to having a good conversation with the next guy that serves me a Big Mac :P

You put a lot of pressure on yourself. I can't really relate because I've never felt pressure in that way. I mean, I wanted to make my folks proud and all that, but I never worried that I'd get into a position in life that I couldn't get out of (other than prison).

For me, personally, I've found that no matter what my job is, there are days that I don't feel like doing it, but I have to. I've also found that the atmosphere of a job is very important...I mean the mood and attitude of the people you work with and around. And you can't always control how other people act. So there's a certain amount of luck involved with your happiness in a job. I know a lot of people who've scored their "dream job" and then started bitching about their unreasonable boss three weeks later.

Shit, gotta go...doorbell.

I skimmed some of the other responses, so I'm just echoing some of them probably.

I would do what you want to do. There's something very fulfilling about waking up at 6 in the morning and getting excited to go to work. I'm like that. I love my job. I don't want to do anything else (well, I want to write science fiction and/or comic books and/or be a video game tester... but barring that, tax law is the way to go).

Anyway, it's better to try out something that you might actually like than to fall back on something that you won't like... especially now when you're still young. If you're 35 years old and you aren't an astrophysisicsasticist yet, then maybe fall back on something else.

SCIENCE FICTION!? Good God, man! Write that novel, USE THAT MAIN CHARACTER (but give me credit)!! Tax attorney, armed with taxpaper binder-bound shield plus sword rids the world of ______.

You got time, plenty of time. Replace TV with "book writing," start somewhere to get the ball rolling. Anything can be rearranged later, just make a habit of writing a little bit everyday at least. An outline, something!
