Only one upset since yesterday, but it was a big one...
#9 VCU defeated #1 George Mason in the quarterfinals of the Colonial tournament!

Pac 10 and ACC tournaments starting today, SEC will start tomorrow!

Just four regular-season games left - a non-conference bout between Princeton and Rutgers, two A10 games, and one Big East game. Those conference tourneys will start ASAP!

The "tournament committee" will consist of me, yellow, and flex (if he's interested). There is no true "formula system" other than the fact that all conference champions get in automatically.

I, for one, will take each of the following things into consideration, since they're all available to me:

• Overall Record
• RPI
• Conference tournament performance

The RPI is calculated by adding three parts.

Part I (25% of the formula): Team winning percentage. For the 2005 season, the NCAA added a bonus/penalty system, where each home win or road loss get multiplied by 0.6 in the winning percentage calculation. A home loss or road win is multiplied by 1.4. Neutral games count as 1.0. More on the effect of these changes can be found here.

Part II (50%): Average opponents’ winning percentage. To calculate this, you must calculate each opponent’s winning percentage individually and average those figures. This is NOT calculated from the opponents’ combined record. Games involving the team for whom we are calculating the RPI are ignored.

Part III (25%): Average opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage: Basically taking all of the opponents’ Part II values and averaging them.

Only games against other teams playing a mostly D1 schedule count when computing the RPI.

Here’s a simple example of how it’s calculated:

Team A has played two games and beat Team B and Team C.
Team B has a 1-1 record. Team B beat a team with a 2-1 record and lost to 2-0 Team A.
Team C has a 1-2 record. Team C beat a team with a 0-2 record, lost to a team with a 2-0 record, and lost to Team A.

So now let’s see how to compute Team A’s RPI.

At 2-0, their winning pct. is 1.000.

Their average opponents’ winning percentage (OWP):
Team B is 1-0 (1.000) without the loss to Team A. Team C is 1-1 (.500) without the loss to Team A. So the OWP is (1.000 + .500)/2 = .750.

Their average opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage (OOWP):
To do this, we need Team B’s and Team C’s OWP. When removing Team B’s results, Team B’s opponents are 2-0 and 1-0 for an average of 1.000. Team C’s opponents are 0-1, 1-0, and 1-0 for an average of .667. The average of these two numbers is .833.

So Team A’s RPI is 1/4 X (1) + 1/2 X (.75) + 1/4 X (.833) = .8333

My only question is, so in other words a team gets rewarded for playing a team with a good record regardless if they win the game or not and penalized for playing a team with a bad record even if they win if 50% of the formula has to do with opponents winning %.


You could go 0 - 3 against top 25 action but just because you played these teams your RPI will be stronger.

Yes, the middle part of your RPI would be stronger. The first part (your winning percentage), however, would be weaker.

I know that's what they use in college basketball, I just never realized how extremely flawed it is.

Just seems strange that your own winning % is worth less than your opponents in this formula.

I think the concept behind it is to put a stronger weight on strength of schedule. It's just a tool used to help determine how good a team is. That's why the top 25 don't always have the best 25 RPI's.

Of course, that's just my opinion - I don't even pay attention to college basketball until the third weekend in March. So who knows?

Great job on the Tourney charts. The America East Championship looks fun. Looks like one team will get the bid and the other will get NIT.

It's been fun. Only one way i can think of to make it more fun! win one more game. I wouldn't count out Boston U for an At-Large bid. They might be a bubble team. I remember Boston U was ranked #19 when i beat them the first time.

And in the tourny here....They knocked off the 2 and 3 seeds to make the final. I bet it would be close.

Well UConn, i hate to inform you that DePaul (me ) is also in the Big East and I regret to inform you, but DePaul WILL WIN THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT. I have played everyone in the Big East now and you are all WHO I THOUGHT THEY WERE.... BUT I WONT LET THEM OFF THE HOOK AGAIN! lol .

Just hope we dont have to play eachother early, if we meet in the finals, maybe we can both still make it to the tourey!!! Cause i plan on winning it and i believe i need it worse than you!

Perhaps in an act of protest against the tournament being held at the Richmond Coliseum every year, Delaware failed to show for the Colonial Tournament semifinals, forfeiting to VCU. I'll take any help I can get in getting this much needed auto bid.
