after this I'll try to gather up the movies you guys think must go in the top X and then I will ask for a modification on the number of options for a poll if it's necessary, so that we can decide the spots.

i think it'll be a pita trying to convince a mod programmer, although im pretty sure is just a change of a constant.

How about we all go toss each other off instead? That would be more profitable than this stupid thread. It's quite obvious that you can't choose a top "however many" movies thread as millions of people have millions of different views/opinions/tastes/etc. and this is just a waste of our God given time. I regret even entertaining this thread.

For the record, it's 00:20 here and I am wasted. Don't take that to heart. I'm going to have sooo much fun when I wake up tomorrow and log on to see what I did last night.

What's worse is that I seem to have lost the "delete post" button... I'm sure there is one here somewhere...

...and joshy scores a hat-trick.

when we arrive at 20 votes, i'll start asking your opinions again for the definitive list.

The Hurt Locker won an Oscar, don't you think it deserves to make the list?

Watch it if you haven't yet.

:P

I grant you life, old topic.

Also, the godfather is an overrated piece of shit.

Shawshank Redemption, it's a wonderful life, and Unforgiven are the 3 best movies ever made.

The Hurt Locker was such a stupid movie.

You want a war movie that doesn't grossly misrepresent any facts while still being art, check out Full Metal Jacket. You want Hollywood pablum that insults anyone who works in EOD, watch The Hurt Locker.

Mine:

For serious:
- Pulp Fiction
- Shawshank
- Snatch (or Lock stock if you prefer it; I just loved Brad Pitt in Snatch)
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
- Trainspotting
- Fight Club

For lulz:
- Final Destination series
- Saw series
- The human centipede
- House of 1000 corpses plus its sequal (I forget the name)

No Hurt Locker.

Honestly, though, I think it'd be better to start from scratch without a base list. As long as someone kept track of how many votes any one movie got, it'd work. Yea or nay?

What on earth possessed you to call those 3 (4 including Lock, Stock & 2 smoking barrels) movies "serious"?

I mean they are movies I love, they themselves are not serious, but my love of them is.

The other ones are just mindless dribble which I seem to watch a lot of.

Zulu
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Magnificent 7
Dr Strangelove
(actually, if I had an all-time top 10 this would definitely be in there)
Disney's Peter Pan - the only classic that they succeeded with in my eyes, though I still have a few probs with it.
Later
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Airplane
Dark Crystal
One Flew Over the Coockoo's Nest

This is a good list except for The Magnificent 7. I disagree on that. Could have been great but was just a jumbled mess of screen time for too many at-the-time celebrities. I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of it, rather than a remake of the Seven Samurai.

For my 60's and previous notables that are off the top of my head and not spending a lot of time on making a comprehensive list (that also attempt to avoid mentioning movies already mentioned in the first three or four pages of this thread -- which is all I've bothered reading so far):

The Third Man
High Noon
Double Indemnity
Midnight Cowboy
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Touch of Evil
(properly edited, of course)
Citizen Kane
The Killing
Paths of Glory

Of course film in general got much more interesting after 1968, when the MPAA lifted the rule that bad guys must always lose. That's part of why you have such an explosion of interesting dark-themed films in the 70s.

Could you imagine Se7en or The Usual Suspects being made pre 1968? Also, both of those movies should be on any great movies list.

I personally find those two movies to be overrated. Does the usual suspects fare well with repeated viewings? For me, that movie is all about the reveal(which I guessed about a third into the movie, Keyser Soze, pfft, I'M KEYSER SOZE!)

It's been a long time since I last saw se7en, but my abiding memory of it is that it is fucking stupid. The hurt locker type of stupid.

In that case maybe you should stick to movies like Transformers 3. Sounds about your speed.

Haven't seen it. The first one went right over my head. I just don' know, the kids today and their highfalutin concept movies. Give me something easy to understand man! Cuz obviously my mind is just too simple to deal with the complexity of movies like.. The Usual Suspects, and.. Se7en.

Any pre-60s movie list without Wizard of Oz should be eliminated from the planet.
