Made me laugh, even though I am more used to belay on, not passant on.

Edit: I believe I just missed the joke. How embarrassing.

I was unaware rock climbing was for nerds, because that was hilarious.

En passant is a obscure chess move that the average person know little about. People who, when trying to fleece another player, illegally capture a queen and say "I took it using en passant" Neither player actually knows what en passant is so the rules about it tend to change and eventually every move is lead by "en passant".

Someone how rock climbs says belay on before doing anything (climbing a face, or resuming movement after a pause) to make sure the person at the other end of their rope is actually holding on in case they fall.

the joke is just drawing the parallels between the two groups and the frequency of use of a single phrase. Army was right, it is a pretty bad joke.

But the average rock climber probably doesn't know what "En passant" means as edocsil said. It's more for people who know a lot about chess, aka nerds.

En Passant is easy.

I sort of groaned lol.

MDF is right, en passant isn't too hard, it's just very situational... ;)

if you don't get a joke, don't try to explain it.
