Please CC'ers be gentle with me as i'm a Newbie, but does players missing turns happen a lot or have i been unlucky on this particular game?

Don't fret. Some New Recruits aren't dedicated enough and tend to miss turns. Once you start playing higher ranks, people will get more serious.
