Re: AVATAR (the movie)
I went and saw it in Imax 3d.
Special Effects/3D
Everything was a little blurry, nothing was ever really in focus. The poor quality of the 3d and blurry/fuzzy images gave me a headache, and the glasses on my head made it worse. I've seen much better filming quality and realism on my 720p projector at home watching Planet Earth etc. I was very disappointed.
Screen/Audio
The screen is huge, but about the same size as my 120" projector screen at home given the seating distance from the screen etc. Proportionally it was about the same, but it's always cool see the big Imax screen. It just wasn't as special this time, as this is my first trip to imax after buying my screen. I thought the Audio was a little lacking. I had expected much better given it's Imax, and given the entire movie is "fake" and they can program whatever audio they want to come out of whatever speaker very easily. So the audio wasn't complex and engaging, and wasn't very loud/involving to suck you into the experience.
Plot
I thought the plot and story line was pretty stupid. Several points of the story are nothing more than to showcase the 3d, and just bored me.
Cost
It was $16 USD to see it at Imax. You can buy a DVD for less than that.
I should also mention I had a reflection off the back of my glasses from the ambient lighting in the room. The glasses also use Polarization to create the effect, and it caused issues for me.
Overall, I'd give the movie a 6.

Re: AVATAR (the movie)
I don't think I have ever really enjoyed a feature film shown in IMAX. I have seen many IMAX features that were designed for IMAX, films at museums and amusement parks and so forth, and most have been awesome. But as far as feature films go, I haven't been impressed. I remember that Spiderman at the IMAX was almost a brutal experience for me. Left me seasick and queasy and with a bit of a headache. Generally I am not a fan of 3D anyway, it just seams a bit gimmicky to me. I saw AVATAR on the regular sized screen but in 3D. I wish I would have seen the non-3D version.
I know the plot had a lot of predictability, but for some reason it didn't really bother me at all. I would actually like to see it again in non-3D and absorb it one more time.
I appreciate the IMAX 3D review, though. I will avoid it, I think.

That's like saying "I'd hate to be burned to death, so I'm off to the electric chair instead."
hahaha3hahaha, have you seen a big budget blockbuster type move in recent years that you liked? I am not being sarcastic, just curious.

Re: AVATAR (the movie)
I went into the movie with no real expectations and was pleasantly surprised by what I received in return. I saw the movie first in 2D and then another friend wanted to go see it in 3D and I figured I'd go and see how that went as well. It certainly is not the "greatest movie ever," but in my opinion (as someone who watches upwards of 50 movies in theater a year) it was one of the top five movies of 2009.
Anyone who goes into movies, especially any movie that deals with science-fiction/fantasy, and expects some intellectually moving experience is a bit naive in my opinion. Some movies are made to produce spectacular visuals and great entertainment, and that is all. Transformers is one of those movies where the plot isn't that great but nobody can argue the visuals weren't awesome.
I feel like Avatar fell sort of in the middle. The plot wasn't superb, but it also wasn't lacking all that much either. It's a rather long movie and was paced quite well as I never thought I was "sitting through a long movie" like I did with the Harry Potter films and the Lord of the Rings films. It had a few minor "make you think" moments, but for the most part was all about being visually fantastic, which it certainly did achieve.
Overall, I'd give the movie a B+, or maybe an 7.5/8 out of 10. It was worth my movie to see it in the theater, and I don't feel bad about paying full price to see it twice, and that is usually the barometer I use to decide on movies and it has served me well for a long time.

Re: AVATAR (the movie)
Loved it, just watched it on-line. Not very original on the story lines though, the first hour I thought am I watching Dances With Wolves??? The rest of it reminded me of Return of the Jedi with the Empire vs. the Ewoks.
Hey anyone else ever try:
http://thepiratecity.org/
Awesome site, new movies all the time, only problem is most of them were bootlegged in Russia, I believe, so any subtitles are indecipherable, to me. Also many links don't work, but keep trying, they have the movies they promise.
Sherlock Holmes should be up anytime now, if not already.

Re: AVATAR (the movie)
I have very mixed feelings about this movie... I find myself wishing the movie was real, but it was ultimately so unrealistic that the message lost its value and left me disappointed. As an artistic achievement I guess it succeeds. All I know is that I want to see it again.

Re: AVATAR (the movie)
The visuals were great.
But, the plot was SO predictable!! The characters were also so stereotyped and the dialogue was lame. Seemed to have been written with 12 year olds in mind.
worth seeing for the visuals. that's about it.
Comparing it to Dances With Wolves is an insult to Kevin Costner's acting, and that's saying something!!

Re: AVATAR (the movie)
I thought it was awesome. THere were somethings that were a bit predictable and the dialogue got a little...at times but I think the overall movie was able to make up for it and then some.

hmmmm...
I can think of 4 great movies released in the 21st century- American history X, Kill Bill volume 1, Inglorious Basterds and Fight Club.
I don't think American History X or Fight Club were 21st century movies...
