I agree with Sully, some of colors can be a little clashing. You clould mess with all the background colors, or use the shadows. I think the shadows add a professional appeal and look to it all.

Are you really just trying it without shadows so you can get out of the tedious centralizing? ;)

I like the map without the shadows but agree with sully and Andy after having a better look. I think pastel colours would help reduce the clash, but I really like the colours you have at present.

Tough choice, it's your call.

Definitely keep the shadows. They define the numbers much better.

No. Not neccecarily. I just had an epiphny regarding the shadows necessity.
I agree that the shadows give it a more proffessional look, but one must also consider that the map is way less cluttred without them though.

I prefer the map with the army shadows. I just think that it is more visually pleasing with them, it seems more complete.

I should start proof reading. 'coordinated' was meant to be 'required' or a word to that effect. I should also just pay attention when typing.

Isn't there someone really good at centering army shadows that we could ask to help this map out? This is really silly.

I'm willing to mess with xml for a while to deal with centering if I had the most recent map with shadows (no numbers) and the most recent xml. (Via PM, whatever). If the author doesn't mind or wants me to.

it's harder than it looks coleman, (tell my grandma to suck eggs if you've done it before and are very adept at it)

i'm sure fitz will fix it in his own time.

I have seen this army shadow centering become a problem on several maps now, and it seems like people are perhaps going about it the wrong way.

Wouldn't it be possible to create the circles so they have the right number of pixels so that there is exactly one pixel at the center (and not the corner of 4 pixels together)? And if that is possible, you would just need to find the location of that single pixel for each circle and the numbers would be perfectly centralized. Here is an exaggerated image to explain what I mean.

Image

In the first image, the red circle is centered above the intersection of the 4 colored pixels. If you were to create an XML of this image you would have to pick either the red, yellow, blue or green pixel as the center and therefore the number would never be truly centered.

In the second image the red circle is centered about the red pixel. It would be very easy to center the numbers for this circle because you would simply need to find the coordinates of the red pixel.

I think the problem is most cartographers have army shadows that aren't centered about a single pixel. That makes the job of perfectly centering the numbers impossible. If you shift the circles so they are directly above a pixel you would be able to center everything exactly with relative ease. None of the "a little too far to the right, and a little high" debate would be necessary.

I'm dealing with circles and coordinates this afternoon myself. I've found that in Photoshop if you drag out a guide it will snap to the center of the circle, and the info window gives you the coordinates of that guide. Then of course you need to subtract 3 from the X coordinates and and 23 to the Y coordinates to make it CC-friendly. With a few exceptions where I made mistakes with my numbers, I nailed the coordinates the first time out.

Answer to sully8oo.
In yor example its look easy, but dont forget that number 1 have 7px horizontal, and number 2 have 8px horizontal, and you can put numbers in center if you hav even and odd numbers of px. If you put to circle have 24px horisontal(ofcoure he must have 24px vertical to) when you put number 2 you easy can put in centar, but number 1 can not put in centar.
If you change circle to have odd number px(25x25) then number 1 can put easy in centar, but number 2 can not put in centar. Try and you see.
And if you see in all maps in CC, you will se that number its not centralised.

ok you guys, we are arguing about 1 pixel!! if there is no way to get them completely centered how did the other maps get quenched and if those arent 100% centered, why does this map have too?
