I left my job working at the British Museum at 4pm and drove home. my home is 10 miles away. it took me 3 hours 40 minutes to drive those 10 miles. unreal traffic, even for London. total chaos.

It's battery, not assault. Knowing the law is very important if you'd like to avoid trouble if you happen to get into or for other reasons.

I'd be surprised if Common Law in the UK defined these two terms differently from the US's.

In England and Wales, a common assault is "any act by which a person intentionally or recklessly causes another person to apprehend immediate and unlawful and personal violence", while a battery is "any act by which a person, intentionally or recklessly inflicts unlawful personal violence upon another person."

Thus throwing a snowball at someone for the purpose of hitting them is a battery if the snowball strikes the person, and is an assault if the snowball misses.

Where I live, it is illegal to throw snow balls period. Considering that 80% of the time there's going to be ice in it, 10% high chance of ice in it, 5% chance it being pure ice, 4% chance of being only powder and doesn't pack, and 1% chance that there isn't any snow to even try (either summer, or all ice).

One of my favorite snow descriptions...and its been a while...is that there is a word for powder, that then gets a 1" crust of ice on it. I believe the word is swiss...but could be german or french...but means; "cuts the legs of deer"

It is not a skiers favorite snow typically. Ill bet the deer dont love it either.
